Thorough review for NBEO II

Overall, I found this review guide very helpful in preparing for the NBEO. As the product description says, the book is divided into sections following the same format and weighting as the actual exam: There are many more ocular disease/trauma questions than public health questions, for example.
With each answer, there is a rationale explaining why that choice is correct, or why the others are wrong... this is awesome!

One of the things I noticed was that the questions, especially in the systemic section, focused a lot on the nitty-gritty details. This made it really challenging and at times, discouraging (which is why I gave 4 stars, not 5). However, after taking the test I felt (as did many of my classmates) that the questions on the actual exam tended to be slightly easier than the ones in the book, but that similar topics were covered.

So -- even if you never actually sit down and do all the questions, this book will give you a good idea of what conditions/diseases, etc. to review.

Good NBEO Studying Tool

This review really helped prepare me for boards as a self-evaluation tool to determine which areas I needed to concentrate my studying. Most of the chapters were very concise and representative of the questions that appeared on the national boards.

A few chapters did not give a good representation of the questions that actually appeared on the exam, but overall the questions were very similar to the types of questions were actually asked on the exam.

Overall I would recommend the book to anyone who is preparing for boards and needs a little direction on which areas to emphasize their studying.

I have been out of the field for over 8 years. I've decided to get back into it. Studying at my age was difficult. I found this book on line and decided to give it a try. Loving this book. It makes studying so much easier to learn the materials. What helps too is that this book was compiled by a lot of my instructors when I was in school.

A Worthy Contribution on John's Gospel

I am a former student of Dr. Huntzinger and I vouch for his academic competence as he was the most challenging professor I had at the King's College. I took Greek from him and was the better for it.

This commentary on the gospel of John, as part of the new Spirit-Filled Life New Testament Commentary Series is a welcome contribution to the world of Biblical commentaries. Dr. Huntzinger shows an awareness of textual concerns and yets maintains a readability for the lay reader. This is no small feat to be academically engaging and yet readable. I also like the fact that the Greek is transposed in Greek font, as well as transliterated in English. Throughout the commentary, there are featured boxes or graphs, which highlight major themes or an in-depth word study.

For those who question the integrity of Pentecostal/Charismatic scholarship, you need not worry. The Holy Spirit isn't emphasized on every age or imposed upon the text. This commentary series is really a confirmation of many scholars within the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement and a validation of their contributions. Craig Keener is another such scholar who has offered a commentary on John. Anyhow, for the suggested retail price of $16.99, I would say that it is priced perfectly for the lay reader who simply wants to engage John with greater depth, yet doesn't compromise academic integrity.

This is a very well written book! I believe that Dr. Huntzinger did a masterful job of laying a solid foundation and explanation of John! I think that this easy read book could be a crucial resource for students, professors, scholars, and pastors who desire to look closely at the book of John in a way that speaks to us today! I came away with an enhanced understanding of the book of John, and I would highly recommend this commentary for a personal study and to anyone who is interested in the Fourth Gospel, the "beloved disciple" John.

Dancing Words

Having read Atwood's many excellent novels, I searched for additional works by her. This compilation of early short stories reveals an author testing the literary waters, without plunging in head first. We see early glimpses of Atwood's dark wit and terse descriptions. And we are also treated to many varied and memorable characters, stories and settings. For those of you who believe, as I do, that Atwood is one of the most accomplished authors writing today, these stories, even though not perfect and early in her career, are far more rewarding than most works by mature authors. A must read.

Another great story collection from Atwood

Atwood's short stories are shocking, vibrant glances at some of her most interesting people. The stories in this collection were published in many journals, from the prestigious *Harper's* to the rarified journals like *Fiddlehead* and *The Malahat Review.* Because many of these pieces were published in smaller journals, they've not been widely read. If you see yourself as an Atwood buff, you need this book to complete your collection.

Short Stories by Atwood

I've read most of Margaret Atwoods work and like her writing a lot. This book of short stories does not disappoint. The gist of each story is as follows:

1) The Man From Mars - A Strange oriental man (greasy, poor, unkempt) becomes obessed with a plain, plump, wealthy woman and begins to follow her everywhere. Previously unnoticed, other men wonder what her attraction is and they begin to notice her too.

2) Polarities - A delusional woman develops a relationship with a university colleague. After her commitment, he realizes that the substance of her delusions run deep and have significance for us all. He realizes, too, that life is a paradox.

3) A Travel Piece - A travel writer, feeling estranged from his own life, endures a plane crash only to find that she still can't decide if she's outside, looking in, or inside, looking out.

4) The Resplendent Quetzel - A woman who loses a child at birth torments her husband for his not being there at the time of the news.

5) Training - A young man serving as a counselor at a summer camp for disabled youth has to deal with his hopes and yearnings for their future and his own. He realizes that his idealism and caring will fade gradually and he will no longer care.

6) Lives of the Poets - This story is about the fear and pain of revealing oneself to an audience. A poet gets psycho-somatic illnesses before each reading. She turns to her husband for help but he is not there for her.

7) The Dancing Girls - A repressed student, living out her father's dreams, lives in a squalid room in a large house inhabited primarily by transient foreign students. She becomes intrigues by a neighbor who is chased down the street by their landlord for having a party where dancing girls entertained.

If these synopses intrigue you, then I recommend this book. I have only provided short outlines of each story. None are spoilers. The stories are deep and provide much, much more than what I have reviewed.

About the Author

Robert Paarlberg is Betty Freyhof Johnson Class of 1944 Professor of Political Science at Wellesley College and Adjunct Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and Associate at Harvard's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. What a terrific book for teaching!

What a terrific book for teaching! The only complaint the students had was: 'it's too optimistic.' So then we read The End of Food and -- you guessed it -- 'it's too pessimistic.' That's actually a good pairing: Paarberg's techno-market optimism is a good foil for doomsday scenarios so common in the media. The formatting in Paarlberg's book is user-friendly, intuitive. The Q and A format is stimulating and retains focus for each section. Paarlberg's prose is admirably clear and jargon-free except when explaining jargon that students will encounter in political discourse. The coverage is broad and many concrete examples illustrate important points effectively, culled from experiences all over the world. Food Politics is a sophisticated treatment of a very broad canvass of important issues.

This is an interesting little book that's a quick read. I bought it while taking Rob's class at HKS (which was PHENOMENAL!), but am glad that I'll have my Kindle copy if I want to look back at it.

The late Sam Walton was one of the shrewdest and richest merchants in America. Centered on the building of his Wal-Mart empire, his book, like fellow magnate Sandra Kurtzig's CEO: Building a $400 Million Company from Ground Up ( LJ 5/1/91), is light on biography. However, readers will enjoy the folksy narrative of the small-town millionaire who revolutionized retail distribution. Walton also addresses accusations against him, such as running the competition out of town. Coauthor Huey does a fine job of incorporating candid testimonials from family members and associates, who thought Walton's ideas were sometimes silly. Shortly after Walton's death, the book was given an overly sentimental postscript (a minor detraction) and rushed into print. Highly recommended for public and academic business collections.

Walton is the entrepreneur of the century

This should be required reading for any entrepreneur, especially for those in the retail or service business. As a small business owner whose business is about 50% retail, this book helped me probably more than any of the business books I've read. Sam's determination is inspiring. It is eye-opening to see how Wal-Mart was once a little underdog retailer in the no-mans-land America. I don't think Sam gets the credit he deserves in enterpreneurial circles; in my opinion, he is a far better entrepreneur than Steve Jobs.

Sam's views on pricing and how that affects volume is also helpful. A lot of small business owners refuse to "compete on price", but Sam built a 1/2 trillion dollar empire doing just that.

I think Wal-Mart has gotten an unfair share of negative PR. They are a great company that does much for American commerce.

Sam Walton was truly a testimony of the American Dream. What a story! What an inspiration!

Sam's story of Wal-Mart tells of passion and purpose. What's possible if you believe in putting the customer first, showing love and care for your partners and your associates, and giving back to the community that enables free enterprise. One lesson most important of all is to persist. Also as Sam says, "To succeed in this world, you have to change all the time."

This book also illustrates the journey that faces all entrepreneurs of overcoming adversity and obstacles. It would give you inspiration to succeed in your venture.

This is a gem of a book. Thank you, Sam for sharing your remarkable story. Invest in this book, you will be glad you did. The book you don't read won't help.

What can I say: This is a brilliantly written book about an incredible individual telling his spectacular success story. If you're reading this review, do yourself a favor: stop wasting time and start reading this book instead.

If you're still foolishly reading my review, here's why I love this book so much:
- Sam tells his story from beginning to end, and explains his thinking and principles behind his decisions. He is extremely humble and down to earth.
- Sam will tell a story from his point of few and then on the next page, there will be long quote from someone involved giving their angle on the same story.
- I did my MBA a few years ago; this book should have been required reading. Anyone who understands Sam's principles and applies them will be extremely successful.

Lastly, the people who haven't even read this book and are giving it one star reviews...I hope someday they accomplish enough in life to be worthy to lick Sam's shoes. I wonder if anyone has ever worked harder, improved the lives of more people, and took less for himself than Sam Walton.

The USA is in desperate need of an education on free trade and economics. People believe that trade, robots, etc "destroy jobs." While you are hating robots and trade, why not add shovels to your list? One shovel destroys the jobs of 100 men digging with spoons. Don't stop at shovels. Every tool that improves efficiency and makes our lives better "destroys" jobs.

The secret to high paying jobs and being able to pay employees the highest wage possible is to give them the best tools possible so they can maximize their production. Every job that is eliminated by increased efficiency frees up a worker to do something else. After you're done reading this book, read Henry Ford's "My Life and Work." He paid extremely high wages and constantly hired more people while constantly cutting costs and improving efficiency.

Peoplemaking beats peoplebreaking!

Virginia Satir writes in an easy to relate to style about positive ways to support and encourage growth, development and understanding of the people in your family. Through simple games she helps you get in touch with what the existing relationships are among your family members and how they work, or why they may not be working as well as they might. She reaffirms that we own all of the parts of ourselves that make us who we are, and makes it easy and OK to take a look at them. Perhaps there are some behaviors that are puzzling, or get negative results that you see in yourself or other family members. After reading this book, you will see loving and comfortable ways to bring those behaviors into the light of day without criticism or embarrassment. Then, following simple but meaningful guidelines, you and your family will gain understanding and insight into behaviors and relationships that your family uses as its operating system. You will be able to work on changes that you decide to make, and continue to feel trust and support of your family. Perhaps they want to change some things too.

Uplifting and Encouraging

As a family man and soon counselor-to-be, I am dismayed at the number of books re: the family that are pathology oriented. If as a student all you ever were some of the mainstream texts/resources, which are so reductionistic, you would come away with a view of the family that would have you questioning whether or not the very institution itself is viable for sustaining the mental health of all of its members.
Not so Virginia Satir's work which is very positive and uplifting. She resists the temptation to simplistically blame everything on "dysfunction" between the partners in the "marital dyad," and instead looks at the family as a collection of imperfect individuals who all have a potential to grow and learn.
I especially like her emphasis on finding the family's strengths and building on those. Anyone can take a look and come up with "what's wrong." But this does nothing to solve problems and foster resiliency, which all families need in this decidedly familly-hostile culture.
Whether you are an experienced family therapist, counselor-to-be,or a mental health generalist, if you work with and have an interest in families, I encourage you to get to know the works of Virginia Satir. This one perfectly encapsulates her paradigm for working with families in need.
