If you've got an hour and $3, give it to this book. It is a wide-angle look at the backstory on the problems facing women in modern Indian society. It is very interesting and highlights many points that surely contribute to India's "war on women."

"Habituated to the debasement of women".

I was surprised to learn that India was rated worst G20 country for women in 2012. This placed them below Saudi Arabia, well noted for its male oriented culture. I was unaware that the female to male ratio had decreased to 930:1000. This book makes a devastating point about a country that has been afflicted with female infanticide, attacks, dowry killing, honor killing, and unpunished rapes. The author investigates in depth the cultural factors contributing to the problem. The book also makes real suggestions for reform. The prose is never dry . There is no soap box lecturing, but a statement of conditions. Bear witness.

A required reading for women everywhere!

India currently has 37 million more men than women.

THAT is a scary statistic.

Another scary statistic? India and China together represent 36% of the entire world population and these two countries have phenomenal sex-ratio imbalances....The author points this out and highlights that this is going to have significant global implications. ...I'm trying to understand those implications but I can't...I'm still stuck on the number and it sends chills down my spine.

I purchased this "Kindle Single" as I wanted to learn more about Indian culture and how women are treated in India.

India is not the only country that suffers from rampant violence against women however given the increased international exposure from the violent gang rapes that took place in 2012 I was curious to understand the cultural and social issues that resulted in the "state of India" today.

The author, Sunny Hundal does an excellent job of explaining the social and economic issues which has developed this country into a "ticking timebomb".

Although this is an essay, Sunny Hundal covers a wide array of information to present the topic and leaves the reader more informed and curious to learn more.

A worthwhile read and I would argue a necessary read, especially for women!

The advantages of this title are that after the first few chapters which cover the basics of Clinical Biochemistry such as 'Requesting and Interpreting tests' and basic acid-base biochemistry, the rest of the text is dedicated to system disorders. From the first chapter of the book, this is a highly patient orientated title with 4 cases in the first chapter on the basics of tests putting what is said into a clinical context. The rest of the chapters are really useful if you want to get your head around specific conditions such as 'Jaundice' and how they are caused at a biochemistry level or you wish to revise the acid-base balance and how this relates to blood gasses.
The disadvantages of this title are that I would have liked to have seen summaries of the key points at the end of each chapter within the print, though this is not essential as should you wish them, they are in part included in the online extras which have both questions & a few notes available for you to utilise.
In conclusion if you are in the first few years of medical school then I would hazard to say that this is one of the best titles available covering clinical biochemistry as unlike many others that I have read in this area & reviewed, it is not padded out with detail that you would not be expected to know at medical school and includes many useful case examples. I would strongly encourage a medical student to see whether this title is in their university library if they don't want to purchase it straight away or look at the online resources which are freely available for the title to see whether it suites your style. About the Author

Philip D. Curtin (1922–2009) was author of The Image of Africa and Two Jamaicas. He edited Africa Remembered, a collection of narratives by former slaves and others involved in the slave trade. He was a member of the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin from 1956–1975. From 1975 until the time of his death, he was a member of the faculty of Johns Hopkins University.

Curtin focuses on the number of slaves that were taken across the Atlantic. Throughout the book the author uses different research methods to express how many Africans were shipped across the Atlantic, from what parts in Africa, and the destination where they were shipped. He uses other historians' estimates and either tries to prove them correct or prove them incorrect. The author's intent on writing this book was to explore old knowledge on the slave trade and not to present new information. His intent was to use old data and publications and come up with his own theories or "synthesis". He does this by using documents and estimations that have already been written. With this information he then tries to correlate them with previous documentation to prove or disprove them. Also, he states that his numbers are not precise and should not be considered exact but only estimations. He did not intend the book to be a definitive study, but a challenge to others, who can, to correct or complete his findings. He also knew that in time with new data and more sophisticated forms of calculation his work might be modified. Another area he did not want to discuss was the morality of the slave trade. This book was not intended to blame any one person or country nor did it discuss the evils of the slave trade. He felt these aspects of the trade have already been proven and in his opinion is no longer disputed. I felt the author did an adequate job presenting and explaining the material. He discusses in detail where he found the information, the name of the historian who first presented the information, and how he proved or disproved the information. He did a great deal of research in finding accurate information and when there was none given he explains how he came to his conclusions and the methods in which he used. However, I would recommend taking a statistics class before reading this book. It goes in depth with various methods and a great deal of numbers. This can be quite confusing at times. It also warrants the reader to re-read certain areas of the book. However, this was his intention because he wanted his readers to think about what he has written and possibly challenge it. The organization of the chapters are in a manner in which the reader can first review some of the previous literature about the numbers of Africans shipped during the slave trade. The first chapter also examines the major players and when they were involved. The other chapters are organized by certain areas or by centuries. The centuries are in chronological order so that the reader does not go from one century to the next back to the previous. It is easier to follow this way. The second to last chapter is a summery and also explains the major trends within the slave trade. It explains when it was at its peak and when it started to diminish. The final chapter was about European mortality and how many European sailors died while involved in the trade. This chapter really did not fit in with the other chapters and would have been better left out. Also the author uses various techniques in which to prove his calculations and assumptions. Though they are only estimations they give the reader a sense of credibility. At times he uses several historians' estimates and compares them to each other. Sometimes they are similar, but when they are not he explains both of their theories and where they could have been incorrect. This gives the reader the ability to either agree or disagree with his assumptions. After he discusses all the inaccuracies then he explains his own theories and backs them up by population records, shipping records, or other data that was documented during the time period. This also adds to the author's credibility. At other times when he can not find any information due to loss or some other reason, he then uses information from other areas and correlates them with the area he's discussing. He then uses this information to estimate the numbers of slaves imported. Overall, the author does a good job of discussing his intentions. His work is well researched and highly credible. However, his methods and overwhelming amount of numbers may confuse the average reader. In this case a reader may want to choose to read about a different aspect of the Atlantic slave trade.

Landmark on the Slave Trade & Atlantic History

As the first systematic study of the Atlantic slave trade based on thorough examination of manuscript sources, "TAST" deserves 5 stars. Its importance in providing reliable statistics, and influence in spurring later research, ensures its permanent value. Unlike Curtin's other books, e.g. "Rise of the Plantation Complex", this is a close (not narrow), focused counting exercise rather than a broad socioeconomic study at which he excelled. Subsequent scholarship has inevitably revised some findings, primarily by raising the number of Africans. "TAST" concludes that approximately 9,500,000 slaves were transported. The currently accepted number is probably 12,00,000+, likely rising further as more evidence is tapped. But Curtin welcomed revisions; his enduring contribution is a method also employed by successors. Paul Lovejoy's 1982 and 1989 articles in the Journal of African History trace the course of upward revision, and his "Transformations in Slavery" contains necessary context. D. Eltis et al, "The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade: A Database on CD-ROM" presents the current figures, and is a great boon to scholars. Curtin helped pioneer "tropical" history and Atlantic studies, but Atlantic history has moved on from the framework he devised. Now this book might better be titled "The African Atlantic Slave Trade." This odious commerce also entrapped non-Africans: Amerindians were sold within the Americas and to the West Indies, and convicts and indentured servants exiled from Europe (especially Britain) were also human chattel in the Atlantic system. Curtin's work, including training dozens of skilled historians such as Lovejoy, significantly advanced understanding and debate on this topic, and the world owes him a debt of gratitude.

Sexy and sweet m/m novella bundle with three standalone stories

This is a fantastic bundle of m/m romances, 3 standalone novellas with a lovely combination of sexy and sweet.

Served Hot
I really enjoyed this touching and sweet (with a lot of sexy) romance between David and Robby. On the surface it's two guys, one who is shy and one bold enough to make the first move and invite his coffee crush to explore things together. But as in most gay romance stories, there is the "are you out" conversation, the difficulties with family and friends, and in this case a grief component due to the loss of David's longtime secret boyfriend. There is a definite sexual attraction between them and I liked the tentative and angsty first steps in their relationship which was just as a real as those found in any straight romance. Once things get moving along the sex is well written and steamy, adding some spice to their relationship. Overall it was a really lovely story and definitely worth the read. 4 stars.

Baked Fresh
The heat has definitely turned up a notch in this sexy m/m contemporary romance featuring Robin and Vic. Vic is older by a decade or so and has been through several changes in the last few years, most of his own making including losing 100+ pounds and getting into decent shape. He's decided to try dating again and has his sights set on Robin, a few years his junior but someone he's lusted after since meeting and a man who is now free, having been dumped by his last boyfriend. Robin has confidence issues, with the breakup of his relationship and his struggles with addiction, though he's been clean for the last 3 years. Volunteering at a local shelter helps keep him focused and Vic's interest in him is heartening. But can a rebound relationship heal his heart and give them both something to build a future on?

I quite enjoyed this story. Both characters were interesting and likeable, each having their own self esteem issues and problems from the past that make them believable and acceptable to finding someone to care about. The sexual relationship between them is easy for both of them to fall into, and has a definite dominant/submissive feel to it as Vic strives to provide for Robin, both in the bedroom and out. The sex scenes are hot and steamy, but they aren't enough to make a relationship work long term and while Vic has put his cards out on the table, it's up to Robin to decide if he's willing to invest in something long-term. I liked the two of them together, their relationship based initially on friendship and moving forward into something more intense. There are some humorous scenes as well as tension filled ones as life ebbs and flows around them. Overall, it was an entertaining and enjoyable read. 4 stars.

This sexy contemporary romance, the third in the Portland Heat series, is the story of Chris and Lance. Chris runs a vegan coffee shop, a business he started with his ex that they still co-own though their relationship fizzled out. He's got no time for someone new. But Lance, his young, hot delivery guy has other ideas, tempting him into a friends with benefits kind of arrangement. Lance is younger than Chris, just figuring out where he wants to go to grad school and what his future will hold. When Lance makes it clear to Chris that he wants him in the picture, will Chris be able to get over his hangup about their age difference and accept a new vision for his future, one that includes Lance?

I really enjoyed this story! It was a great opposites attract romance, with Chris as the older, grumpy bear type guy and Lance the young, flirty and fun one. Chris has so much responsibility on his plate, running the business and taking care of his employees that letting loose is difficult for him, though Lance makes it clear that he's up for whatever Chris will give him. Lance is very engaging as a sweet, friendly, responsible guy, clearly very mature for his age and knowing exactly what he wants, even if Chris doesn't want to believe it. The attraction between them is undeniable and leads to several hot and steamy love scenes, ones that have an underlying emotion to them that Chris is afraid to look into too deeply. Lance on the other hand is fearless, going for what he wants, and he wants Chris. The development of their romance is sweet and though it takes Chris a while to believe that Lance could really want him, the end result is a satisfying and enjoyable romance. 4.5 stars!

Super Hot in Portland

I love anything by Annabeth Albert, and this is no exception. I'm so glad that the recent sale gave me an opportunity to pick this up. Three super sweet stories that stand on their own, but are also part of a world that makes the stories richer if you read all of them together. I love that this author writes real people struggling with real issues. They're not all male model types, and they don't always behave the way you want them to. You really can't go wrong with anything by Annabeth Albert

I love this series!

I wrote this review back in April 2016 but somehow neglected to post it here on Amazon.com.

Bundled Up contains the first 3 novellas in the Portland Heat series: Served Hot, Baked Fresh and Delivered Fast. If you want to purchase them individually each one can be read as a standalone and there are no cliffhangers. Characters from previous books make brief appearances so I liked reading them in order and the bundle saved me money.

This is a great series and each one was a 5-star read for me but I must admit that Baked Fresh was my favorite. I’ve reviewed each of the books in this bundle separately.

Served Hot – Robby and David, first person POV by Robby
Robby is a self-employed barista with a coffee cart. Everyday around 11:50 AM David comes to Robby’s cart and orders a vanilla latte. Robby doesn’t know if David is gay or not but he’s got a huge crush on him.

David hasn’t lived in Portland too long. He moved there after his long-time lover died. David hasn’t been out of the closet very long because his lover insisted that their relationship be kept a secret.

This story was fun to read and I loved how Annabeth Albert broke the book into sections based on what Robby was able to get David to order. June: Vanilla Latte; August: Turtle Mocha; February: Mexican Mocha and April: Coconut Frappe. Their relationship develops slowly but once things get going – hot, hot hot!!

Baked Fresh – Vic and Robin first person POV by Vic.
Vic does New Year’s Resolutions and he does them well. Last year he resolved to lose 100 pounds and he did. This year he resolves to start dating. He’s been crushing on Robin for a long time but last time Robin was single Vic hesitated too long and another guy swooped in and claimed Robin. Now Robin is single again and Vic resolves to be his rebound guy.

Vic and Robin both volunteer at a local homeless shelter that tries to help people in recovery – from drugs, alcohol, etc. Robin has been in recovery for nearly 3 years and spends a lot of time at the shelter. He has a lot of hang-ups left over from his days as an addict but Vic wants to help him with those problems.

This book was full of feels; I laughed and I cried while reading it – my favorite kind of story.

Delivered Fast - Lance and Chris, first person POV by Chris
Chris co-owns a restaurant, The People’s Cup, with his ex. Lance works for the bakery that supplies the restaurant and just took over the delivery route that includes Chris’s restaurant. When they meet Chris is attracted to Lance but knows that Lance is too young for him.

Lance is interested in Chris and flirts outrageously with him. When he finds Chris on the floor of his restaurant with a plumbing emergency he gets his plumber dad to come help out. While they wait for his dad to arrive Lance continues to flirt with Chris and Chris continues to resist – for a while. They finally agree to a no-strings fling for the summer – until Lance has to go back to school.

Chris and Lance have a bit of a rough time getting to their HEA but it’s a great, sexy, hot story and I enjoyed it a lot.

The most balanced view in the industry

Doug Hoffman's book provides the most balanced and wide reaching view of operational risk in print -- the book addresses large corporate, societal, and management issues, in addition to the more standard operational risk topics, such as quantification and regulatory matters. This is the type of perspective that only someone from the industry -- who spent a number of years as a practitioner can provide. And the inclusion of real life cases brings the whole discussion of operational risk down to a practical level and can serve as a blue print for the implementation of an operational risk program. This book is a great value and already a classic text in the field.

Too much and not enough!

This book is good for those who already know what OpRisk is all about, or at least are familiar with banking terms and financial measurement systems. If you are new to the game, you are likely to become very frustrated.
Mr Hoffman throws a multitude of operational risk "building blocks" on the floor in the opening chapter, tells us that we will use them to build a "house", picks them up one-by-one and explains them - sometimes well, sometimes poorly. If you already have the big picture, i.e. you know what the finished "house" is supposed to look like, you will be able to follow - most of the time (see below). If you know little or nothing about OpRisk, I am fully convinced that the book would be easier to understand backwards - i.e. the chapters are read in reverse order (no joke).
There are also several points in the book which had me scratching my head at the consistency of it all! To pick just one example, on page 186 there is a list of what Mr Hoffman calls "Top Down" and "Bottom Up" risk assessment methodologies. In this list, "Delphi Scenarios" is listed as one of the TOP DOWN methods. Two pages later, under the heading "BOTTOM-UP RISK ASSESSMENT METHODS", Delphi Scenarios are discussed/mentioned!!! What is it really - a Top Down or Bottom Up method??
There are several other examples throughout the book likely to cause more than a little confusion to the attentive beginner.

Taking Operational Risk From Theory to Practice

Doug Hoffman's natural writing style makes this representation of twenty best practice principles for operational risk management a compelling read. Surpassing the strong efforts of previous authors on this subject matter, Doug imparts his wisdom and experience in a thought provoking analysis of the organisational context for operational risk management, with clear and practical take-aways from every chapter.
The book is littered with case histories, war stories and contributions from many industry professionals and current practitioners, ensuring a rich and balanced view.
Of particular note are the chapters addressing risk response strategies and risk financing alternatives, reminding practitioners that quantification and regulatory lobbying are not ends within themselves.
The book is suitable for any business professional with an interest in harnessing enterprise risk, those practitioners who are just starting out on their operational risk journey, and those seasoned players who believe that they have not yet mastered the subject (which is just about all of us).
