This is the first full-length study of Spanish attitudes toward death and the afterlife in the peak years of the Counter-Reformation. It contains an analysis of the death rituals requested in sixteenth-century Madrid testaments, as well as a detailed account of the ways in which the "good" deaths of King Philip II and St. Teresa of Avila were interpreted by contemporaries. Though focused on death, it also aims to analyze the ethos of Spanish Catholic piety and belief in an age of profound transformations. This is a history of mentalities that combines quantitative and qualitative methods and analyzes the symbiotic relation between beliefs and cultural structures. It is a study of the relation between popular piety and elite theology, between paradigms and deeds, myth and ritual, art and craft. Though concentrating exclusively on Spain, this study places the early modern Spanish mentality in the wider context of the European Reformation and Counter-Reformation and of Western attitudes toward death.

The title snagged me - exactly my interest - Spanish life in the time of Carlos V and Felipe II.
Very well written - the dullest detail flows in great prose. Loaded with footnotes - most of which I ignored.

Excellent scholarship

Eire does an excellent job of placing larger than life historical figures in context. Anyone interested in the Catholic Reformation in Spain should read this book. It will also be of great interest to those who are interested in mysticism, or the general zeal that Spain seemed to be frothing with during the Reformation/Counter Reformation era. The research is impeccable.

In the world of competitive off-shore sailing, Christmas Day is thought of as Boxing Day Eve--that is, the eve of the annual Sydney-to-Hobart Race. One of the world's three major offshore races (along with the Fastnet out of England and America's Newport Race to Bermuda), the 630-mile course from Sydney, Australia, to Hobart, Tasmania, is a test of skills, guts, and endurance in notoriously unpredictable, fickle waters--and in any weather.

On Boxing Day, 1998, the 115 boats jockeying at the starting line off Sydney's Nielsen Park Beach had been warned that low-pressure weather systems were conspiring to guarantee a wild and chancy race. Yet few sailors anticipated the ferocity of the storm that descended around two o'clock the next morning, whipping up gale-force winds and waves tall enough to send 25-ton yachts "spearing into midair," then "plunging down into the trough ... like repeatedly launching a truck off a 30-foot ramp and awaiting the crash." The race quickly devolved into the worst sailing disaster in recent memory. Seven crews abandoned their boats. Over 50 sailors were rescued under near-impossible circumstances. Joining the summer's books on the treacherous Vend?e Globe sailing race (Derek Lundy's The Godforsaken Sea and Pete Goss's Close to Wind), Mundle's effort is the first of three forthcoming titles about the 1998 Sydney-Hobart yachting race (Pocket is publishing Martin Dugard's account in September; Little, Brown will offers Bruce Knecht's next year). In that race, seven boats were abandoned, five sank, six people died and 55 sailors were hoisted by rescuers from the impetuous seas. Seasoned journalist Mundle, himself a three-time Sydney-Hobart veteran, writes a knowledgeable account of the 115 boats and 1135 competitors that left Sydney Harbor on December 26, having precious little warning about the brutal cyclone that awaited them in the perilous Bass Strait. When the seas began towering to the height of five-story buildings, sailors were tossed about their yachts like rag dolls in a malevolent washing machine. Mundle, who covered the race for Australian television, deliberately sails around the tempest of controversies that followed the event, preferring to treat the story as a straight job of blow-by-blow reportage. While his careful plotting of a dozen boats' travails is certainly of interest, a surreal sense of dispassion pervades the text like an eerie calm found in the eye of a storm. Nonetheless, moments of poignancy stand out. One strung-out sailor hallucinates a monkey sitting atop a jagged stump of mast, while several others vow that spending hours in a wrecked cabin full of vomit, diesel fuel and salt-water convinced them to change their lives. "I've been a pretty selfish bastard," says one chastened survivor. "Just ask my wife." 40,000 first printing.

This is the first of several expected books about the disastrous 1998 Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race. Only 44 of the 115 yachts that started the race finished, five yachts sank, seven were abandoned, six sailors died, and 57 racers had to be rescued from the hurricane-strength winds and up to 90' swells. Mundle, a sailor and journalist who reported the awful tragedy live on Australian TV, relies on 124 interviews with survivors to relive the terror and excitement of a storm every bit as fierce as that described in Sebastian Junger's Perfect Storm (LJ 5/15/97). He discusses weather conditions and Australian search-and-rescue operations as well. Though it doesn't really offer any nautical advice on how to weather extreme conditions, as does K. Adlard Coles's classic Heavy Weather Sailing (LJ 10/1/68), this tale should warn offshore sailors that there are indeed times when even best craft can founder. Fast, furious and informative. READ THIS BOOK!

When I decided to read this book, I actually started with another book on the subject recommended by Sports Illustrated. Based on Amazon reviewers I selected this one and wasn't disappointed.
Mundle attempts to show the personal side of the individuals as well as the intense struggle on each boat and helicopter. This is a spellbinding story which he did a good job of relaying. I learned about sailing but more importantly, I learned what it felt like to confront your worst nightmare come true.
This is a great subject correctly described by the author and as a bonus, the pictures in the book are good also. Off-coast sailing? Not for me after this book.

A pretty good read. The story jumped around a bit, but you can keep up with it. The map toward the start was a big help in locating where the accidents happened. The pictures could have used a little more explaining.

This set of stories has the occasional funny moment. The funniest is probably about the mother of a student who was not accepted; she contacted the school and said, “I knew he was not in the top half of his class but I had no idea he was in the bottom half.” For most math professors, many of the stories in this collection will generate the reaction, “It happened to me as well.” Of course there are also the standard pleadings for additional points based on rather“unusual” excuses and the evaluation of the content of student evaluations. The best stories in the book deal with the use of statistics outside of the classroom, not only in Norton’s consulting but also in his experiences with the legal system. One amusing tale was about the makeup of juries in a population that had a significant percentage of African Americans. A person was trying to argue that given that characteristic of the pool, each twelve-person jury should have exactly the number of African-Americans on it that reflected this percentage. His response was of course to point out that this would mean that juror selection could not possibly be a random process. Some of the stories contain material that could be used as unusual examples in classes in statistics and quality control. The best refers to the (now banned) practice of wrestlers that are a fraction of an ounce overweight standing on their heads for a minute or two and thereby “losing” the small amount of weight needed to make their class. There is in fact a physiological reason for this phenomenon. When you combine the teaching of a complex subject, doing research, interacting with students, fellow faculty and the administration, there are a lot of opportunities for humor, frustration and absurdity. - Mathematical Association of America

About the Author
Mick Norton received his Ph.D. in mathematics at Oklahoma State University in 1974 and BS degree in mathematics from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University) in 1968. He is the author of A Quick Course in Statistical Process Control (Prentice Hall) and numerous journal articles in the areas of statistics, statistical process control (SPC), statistics education and mathematics. Now a professor emeritus of mathematics at the College of Charleston, he continues to teach occasional courses, work with students, and engage in two of his favorite hobbies – serving as a statistics expert witness, and consulting with manufacturers on statistics and SPC issues.

What a great read!

This book provides a fascinating peek into the life of a statistics professor through a sequence of short stories. The author's love of teaching and his curiosity are on full display in these stories, which come from various highlights of his career. Some parts of the book are humorous and other parts contain fascinating and little known facts such as why wrestlers might choose to stand on their heads for a few minutes just before being weighed for a match. Reading this book left me wanting more.

This "book" seems to be an advert for the "Magic Memory Series". The "Ultimate Language Learning Secret" is just a set of anecdotes, total rubbish.

The book contained a bunch of links to his blog. It was extremely short and only took an hour to read. It is about as useful as any sales page you can google, with no concrete practical advice.

Worth a read, but for inspiration only

This book is for inspiration only. Please know what you are getting. The "ultimate secret" discussed here is not a method, a system, a plan, a technique, or anything like that. The author does have a number of good books that outline very specific methods to learn a language, but this book is not like that.

That being said, I do think this book is a good read. It's an encouraging read. And it's well-written, as are the other books by the same author. The author doesn't just "tell you the secret", but instead teaches through analogies and examples to make the point. It's pretty obvious what the "secret" is by the end of the book, and I think the "secret" to which he is referring is a very important one to bear in mind.

The author makes a lot of good points in this book, and makes it interesting. But please don't expect there to be some "holy grail" in here, and I do feel that the title is a bit misleading in this case.

Emre Baransel is a graduate of Electrical and Electronic engineering and has two Master's, one in Business Administration and the other one in Information Systems. He has been working in the IT industry for the past 10 years. He has worked for one of the largest fixed-line and GSM technology based companies in Turkey. He was nominated as an Oracle ACE in 2012. The details on how to patch a Data Guard system are excellent and are probably worth the price of the book alone. There are plenty of Advanced Techniques included. Well done!

Introduction:

This book is written by my friends Mr. Emre Baransel and Mr. Nassyam Basha. In the following post, I am going to explain why every Oracle DBA should read this book.

2- The Book:

First chapter of the book explains the Data Guard architecture; what is Standby Database? What`s physical / Logical / Snapshot standby database? Role Transition, Redo apply and SQL Apply? Switchover and fail over? Understand the concepts and the component definitions are a good start to successfully implement an Oracle Data Guard environment.

Chapter 2 shows complete steps to implement a physical standby database. This chapter states and explains most of the options available to implement verify and monitor a successful physical standby database. It provides very deeply explanation of Data Guard initialization parameters.

Chapter 3 starts mentioning pre-requisites before a logical standby database implementation. This chapter states and explains most of the options available to configure verify and monitor a successful logical standby database.

Chapter 4 introduces the Data Guard Borker, it clearly shows its components, benefits and the DGMGRL tool. This chapter shows also Data Guard Borker setup and how it is used to change dataguard configuration and database proprieties. The chapter has a very good section about troubleshooting Data Guard Borker, Tracing and most common broker issues. Authors also explain about the Fast Start Fail over (FSFO) and the Observer.

Chapter 5 is about protection modes, good chapter to understand differences between Data Guard modes. This chapter also has some examples to change protection mode using SQL*Plus, the Broker and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Chapter 6 is about Role transitions (Switch Over and Fai Over). Authors have explained different examples using SQL*Plus, Data Guard Broker and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Chapter 7 is about Active Data Guard, Snapshot Standby databases, Cascade standby. The chapter shows how to enable Active Data Guard option using SQL*Plus and Broker. They show ;
- Techniques to monitor the Active Data Guard environment.
- Integration of Active Data Guard with EBS, SAP and other applications.
- The steps to convert to a snapshot standby database and cascade standby.
- How to implement the advanced compression option and a cross platform Data Guard.

Chapter 8 shows examples to the integration of the Data Guard configuration with;
- Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.
- RMAN
- RAC

Chapter 9 is about Data Guard patching with many examples about patch application, Logical and physical standby databases. This is also a very good chapter.

Chapter 10 and 11 are unique, they cover handling the most common issues in a Data Guard environment and Data Guard best practices using TAF, FCF, FAN and other recommended configurations.

About the Author
Ethel Johnston Phelps (1914–1984) held a master's degree in medieval kiterature, coedited a Ricardian journal, and published several articles on fifteenth-century subjects. She compiled two anthologies of feminist folktales from around the world, Tatterhood and The Maid of the North.

Not Extremely Memorable, But Well Done

My mother purchased this book for me as a very young girl, along with other collections of short-stories, and I remember being enchanted with it. The legends are fascinating, although I don't think the fact that they were all about young women and girls ever crossed my mind (an observation that leads me to believe this book would be good for boys, as well).
I recently re-read the stories, and was delighted. I remember being confused as a girl, since the places, people, and customs are mostly foreign, and so I wouldn't recommend these books to any one younger then six. And even then, with the lack of pictures, it's great for adults to read to kids (no matter what age, within reason). Worth the money.

Great for girls

This book is awesome, esp. for girls. It features folk tales in which the protagonists are all smart, strong, clever, just girls or women. We read it to my daughter at 4, and at 9, she still goes back and rereads the stories.

Girls who can

It was not until after reading these stories to my daughter, that I realized that the fairy tales my generation of women had grown up usually had heroines who needed to be rescued. The heroines in Tatterhood solve problems, rescue themselves and sometimes their princes. Hopefully girls will identify with these competent and confident heroines. I don't know many women who can afford to sit around in an ivory tower waiting for a prince to rescue them. These are wonderful, amusing tales from another and equally valid perspective.

About the Author
Eric Carle is an acclaimed and beloved creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for young children. Since The Very Hungry Caterpillar was published in 1969, he has illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote. Such cute prints and good quality

These prints are really cute and printed on thick quality paper. 12 x 16 in size -- 5 vertical, 7 horizontal. I bought them for my playroom and found some inexpensive frames at Michael's with 11 x 14 mat openings. Most of the prints were too large to fit in that size mat, but I did find 4 that worked. I looked for frames with a 12 x 16 mat with no success. But if you don't want a mat, there are lots of 12 x 16 frames out there. I wish there was a second book of these with additional prints -- they are so great looking!

Beautiful, big, vibrant prints

Great set of prints. Purchased to help decorate our baby's room. Prints are a bit of a off size (14 x 16"), but I was able to find the frames at my local Michael's store. They are on a heavier cardstock, very vibrant, great selections from Carle's books. Extra prints are going to make good gifts, too (framed).

Perfect for Nursery

These Eric Carle prints are perfect for a bright, Carle themed nursery. The prints aren't all from popular Eric Carle books, but many of the pictures are things that are highly exciting for babies and toddlers like trains, rubber ducks, and giraffes.

I found that a cheap, colorful way to frame the prints was Ikea's Nyttja frames. I bought red (framed the caterpillar and the alphabet), green (sloth in the tree and the giraffe), and blue (penguins and train). The frames were inexpensive and the colors complement the prints well. Tiny bit of trimming to get the perfect fit, but quick and easy and fun to look at.
