Realistically Terrifying

Review: POWERLESS by Tim Washburn
I collect stories about EMP's and power grid/infrastructure failure, because that is a very real possibility. If not by an electromagnetic pulse weapon wielded by a hostile foreign power with a bad attitude, then due to Solar flares or the Sun's coronal mass ejections--it can happen, and the consequences would be catastrophic. You need only read Tim Washburn' s excellent and terrifyingly vivid POWERLESS to find out exactly how tremendous. POWERLESS frightened me; it's a thriller, yes; powerful in family drama, agreed. But foundationally, POWERLESS is realistic, bringing-it-home Horror.

"We forget just how painfully dim the world was without electricity...." - Bill Bryson
By Cheryl Stout
I felt POWERLESS was a good example of the post-apocalyptic genre.
What would the world's population do if suddenly there was no electrical power and because of that, no water or sewer service either (because water and sewer lines need electricity to run the pumps)?
A coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun has destroyed the power lines/transformers north of the equator - and some below that. Satellites have been destroyed. Life on earth has just lost its veneer of civilization and people are doing what they need to survive.
The story follows several different characters including the POTUS. Zeke Marshall from Oklahoma is the main protagonist, intent on rescuing family in Texas.
The storyline was good although rather simplistic in spots. I've read other post-apocalyptic stories that I felt were more believable. This one does get across the message of how terrible it would be - for everyone - if something of this magnitude happened.
I wish there had been more on how other people (the greater population) actually survived or didn't survive this disaster.
NOTE: I received this book from Kensington Books through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

What if...
By Jeri
Think of all that modern technology touches in your life. From you cell phone and computer, microwave down to running water. Now, just imagine that it is all shut off without warning and there is no way to get it back to running order quickly. That is what this book imagines if a CME, coronal mass ejection, was heading our way. Would it make sense to warn everyone and cause massive panic or prepare as best you can and let the cards fall as they may.
This book follows several people on their path through the outage caused by a massive CME hitting Earth. Some survive, others do not. But no matter what, they put their loved ones above all others. Isn't that what really matters in times of desperation. As well as American families stories, it tells what could happen globally with international relationships and how governments could work to help one another. Though this is a fiction book, we could face this very real danger any day from our own sun. Gives you pause to think about how you would cope.
I received an advanced ecopy from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
