About the Author

Sir Michael Barber has been chief education advisor at Pearson since September 2011 and is the founder of Delivery Associates.

In 2001, he founded the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit in No10, Downing Street, which he ran until 2005. In this role he was responsible for ensuring delivery of the government's domestic policy priorities across health, education, crime reduction, criminal justice, transport and immigration. The sustained focus on delivery from the heart of government, and the processes the PMDU developed, were a significant innovation in government, of interest to numerous other countries and global institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank. Tony Blair described the PMDU as “utterly invaluable.”

From 2005 to 2011 he was a partner at McKinsey and Company where he played a leading role in creating a public sector practice and founded the global education practice. In 2009 he founded, in Washington DC, the Education Delivery Institute, a not-for-profit organisation that works with more than a dozen US States to apply systematic delivery approaches to improving outcomes in schools and public higher education.

Since 2009, on behalf of the British government, he has visited Pakistan over 30 times to oversee a radical and, so far, successful reform of the Punjab education system.�

He is the author of numerous books and articles, such as How to Run a Government published by Penguin in 2015 and Instruction to Deliver (Methuen 2008), which tells the story of his time in Downing Street, and was described by the Financial Times as “one of the best books about British government for many years.” Deliverology 101 is the textbook on how to deliver in government and was written as the curriculum for the Education Delivery Institute.

Andy Moffit is a Senior Practice Expert and a co-founder of McKinsey & Company’s Global Education Practice. Moffit joined the firm in 2000 and has served clients in the financial services, non-profit and public sectors on a wide range of strategic and organizational issues. Since 2005, he has worked exclusively with education clients―large urban districts, state education departments, national foundations and nonprofits, and private companies―on large-scale reform and key strategic efforts. He is a frequent commentator at education sector conferences and publications. Moffit was an elementary school teacher in Houston, Texas from 1991-93 as a corps member of Teach For America. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Oxford University and Yale Law School, at which he studied education law and policy. He is based in McKinsey’s Boston office.

Paul Kihn is an Associate Principal in McKinsey and Company's Education Practice, where he specializes in human capital strategy, system transformation, and the delivery of large-scale reform. During his six years at McKinsey, Paul has worked with large urban school districts, local and national non-profits, and state and federal public sector agencies in K-12 and higher education. Prior to joining McKinsey, Paul worked as a public middle school teacher and administrator and community youth worker in South Africa, Ireland and New York City. He is a graduate of Yale College and Columbia University's Teachers College and Graduate School of Business. He lives in Washington, DC.

Codology

A sad testament to 'delusionology'. Barber destroyed the notion of "Public Service" with his crackpot "theories". His blinkered advocacy of a system of managing public services through the heavily rationalist and reductionist approach of imposing allegedly objective performance targets on service delivery continues in this sad tome. Compliance with targeted outcomes is assumed to evidence success and the easy measurement of performance against targets allows effective management and monitoring of that performance. Devilology deserves to be condemned for its actual effects: constraining innovation, creating an obsessive concern with a contrived and ill-conceived series of numbers and measures (to the detriment of actual performance), detracting from good quality service, and even encouraging cheating to meet mandated targets.
Please read "Systems Thinking in the Public Sector" by John Seddon published by Triarchy Press in 2008. Seddon presents a rigorous and belligerent critique of the Barberous ideology which was part of the failed and misguided reform regime of the Blair years which rather than reform public services in fact led to the dismantling and demoralization of Health, Education and Policing in the UK.
Barber's book is a dreadful effort based on self-aggrandization and a desire to carry on pedalling his tawdry wares.

ordering the bureaucracy to attention is like punching a feather pillow--one side caves

Rarely has a more simplistic book been written about such an important topic. Barber is convinced that he has the answer to all that ails government--just create a delivery unit and give it marching orders. This little books stands in sharp contrast with Sir Michael's mind-numbing autobiography--rarely has an autobiography of a short stint in government earned so many pages. It's all a joke for sure--simpler policy and more decentralization appears to be the key. Lord knows that governments have tried every centralizing device known to human kind over the centuries--Chief Financial Officers, Deputy Directors of the Office of Management and Budget, Chief Information Officers, czars of all kinds, etc., etc. It can't come from the top--it has to come from implementable policy with strong capacity. As FDR once argued, ordering the bureaucracy to attention is like punching a feather pillow--one side caves, the other plumps out. Deliverology is just such a book except that the feathers go flying only to be cleaned up by the next administration.

How to get things done in Education

Although this book was specifically written for an audience of American education system leaders it is equally relevant to leaders in education systems worldwide, that is once you get past the Americanisms and the term 'deliverology' itself. If we understand any education system as being made up of the frontline institutions that deliver learning (e.g. schools or colleges), the middle tier (usually a form of regional administration) and central government, then Barber's book models a delivery chain method that joins up all three levels. The three levels are co-dependent and therefore jointly accountable for delivery of improvement policy. Traditionally there has been a disconnect between each level in terms of accountability, with each level being held independently responsible, often with separate audit methods, for its part within policy delivery. The implementation model Barber outlines will work if the policy for reforming an education system is owned by each level of the system, is based on robust and honest self-evaluation of where the system currently is and linked to appropriately challenging targets and trajectories for improvement. To me this is common sense but then the common sense barrier is often the hardest one to overcome in policy development and implementation.

Great Self Help/Healing Book

What I Can Tell You: I am not big on self help books because I feel that most of them say things that are so blatantly obvious that it almost seems condescending to read it. However, this one was smart and thorough full of intelligent solutions that can help woman or men work through the transitions of life giving tools and observations that will inspire and heal.

My favorite chapter deals with religion and spirituality. I loved her Spirit Principals to Live By especially the Live an Open Life where she states "Everything for your journey is already with you." She is right you know? It is the world that messes us up, our foundations, upbringing, etc. We come into this world completely ready for everything and then life gets in the way of clarity. Also, "Be faithful to yourself!" Has there ever been a more real statement! So many people, if they were just faithful to themselves and WHO they are, would just be so much more happier. We feel we have to be a certain way, around certain people, we compromise who we are, what we feel, think, want, yet, it gets us no where but feeling unfilled.

This isn't a one night read. This is one of those books that you scan, find gems throughout, open randomly or when needed.

This is a must read for all-whether you are going through the daily routines of life or are in the midst of challenge and extraordinary times. I just gave a copy of "Transitons" to a colleague who's sister is struggling with substance abuse and mental illness and she was very thankful as Brenner's book helped ground her and got her through these hard times--This book will bring solace and interest to everyone who dares to think and view outside the box!

This is a great book to guide you in your fight. There's a lot of material to get through (exercises) and you'll want to go back and redo most of them as additional thoughts come to mind. I'd recommend taking your time as you go through this. It's not a quick one-and-done deal that you want to rip through; instead, I'd recommend a thoughtful approach that involves some deep soul-searching.

Different Editions and an Errata

I just wanted to point out the following:

* The reviews dated prior to the year 2003 refer to earlier editions of the book. The current (3rd) edition was rewritten extensively.

* A list of corrections is available on the Internet. The review guidelines discourage posting URLs, but an internet search with the keywords "stewart galois theory errata" should find the location. You need a postscript reader to view the errata, but a free one is available online.

Accessible intro to field extensions and Galois theory

This book is aimed at upperlevel undergraduates, presumably math majors. I'd say that's about right; it assumes the reader is familar with the basics of groups, and the proofs strike a good balance between rigor and informality.
The book is also accessible to people who have been out of school a while, but are still interested in math. I had to read it more than once to get comfortable with some of the ideas, but Stewart does a good job of providing examples that are understandable given some familiarity with college algebra.
I had some heard about the proofs of the impossibility of trisecting the angle, but had little concept of how that was done. This book made it clear. I had also heard that there was no general formala for solving quintic polynomials, but I was surprised to learn that the solutions couldn't even be expressed by radical equations. I was pleased to be able to follow the proofs.
After reading / working my way through the book at least twice, I feel comfortable enough to tackle more ambitious works. Michio Kuga's "Galois' Dream" adds many new concepts, and illustrates Galois Theory in a different application. Seeing Galois theory in another context has been helpful in understanding what is necessary to being able to use it.

Textbook plus Popularisation

A lovely book that takes time to show off the applications of Galois theory. The expanded sections in the second edition really make a beautiful job of giving a historical and mathematically meaningful context to the central concepts.
However the main body of the work is a quite traditional textbook account that explorers the abstract idea of Galois groups over general fields - leaving the reader to inject the meaning and context. Someone, somewhere is capable of making the central concepts of Galois theory as natural and obvious to the reader as it was to Galois. But this isn't the book.
