The authors present a thorough and detailed analysis of the production of Roman armor in the first and second centuries C.E. They examine torso armor, helmets, leg and arm armor, and shields. The authors clearly show that the Romans had a highly sophisticated understanding of metal working and even produced low slag iron and steel, which modern scholars and metallurgists can not explain. Modern low slag iron and steel were not produced until the invention of machine powered rollers in the 19th century. Clearly we still have much to learn about the ancient Romans.

Very good specific resource, Not a general information book.

This book is an awesome scholarly work on the production and distribution of Armour in Imperial Rome. It highlights the economy of the military machine that was Rome. Having said that, this is not a book to purchase for general information on Rome.

The Age-Old Kieso Problem

Except for having to buy it new, there are reasons to like the Kieso series including this 13th edition of Intermediate Accounting, which is really Financial Accounting II. These authors have done everything to make the subject progressively more accessible in each edition. I know as I suffered through the courses once too. I have a master's in accounting and am a CPA. It's surprising how many accounting texts assume the student has certain prerequisite skills and knowledge and equally surprising how so many accounting professors want to lecture on what enhances their knowledge base instead of teaching to the student. The Kieso books are really teaching books. I buy used recent editions for myself just for reference since they're so well done and so cheap. Not all CPAs do that but I practice financial accounting.

You'll be lucky if the professor is permissive enough to go with an older series because most students quickly sell these books once the course is over, so used editions are MUCH cheaper. But most professors insist on the most recent edition. I think they're motivated because their authority rests on being up to date. In this 13th edition, there's a big emphasis on International Accounting Standards, and you can be sure the professors want to bone up on this themselves. The financial meltdown has discredited the whole U.S. financial complex, and one result is that the pull is now stronger toward international accounting standards rather than U.S. GAAP. Also, the authors anticipate that everyone wants to use the cheaper previous edition, so they always change the end of chapter problems. The publisher also provides the professors with additional materials including exam materials, so there's always the incentive for the professor to use the latest edition and claim that it's the only acceptable one due to the end of chapter problems.

These are really heavy books - no fun to carry around. The book weighs 6.2 pounds. That's ridiculous. 1,440 pages and you darn well have to know this material. This gives a hint why so many people, despite knowing that good accountants tend to stay employed in a recession, won't even consider this route. But at least the Kieso books, other than their workbooks, are hardcover with large dimensions and quality paper and binding. Nothing is worse than using a thick softcover text that feels like a phone book. Unfortunately they're expensive new, and you might one day be buying the 18th edition used for a fraction of this price.

Note, if you need the WileyPlus access code, it is NOT included with this book. If your professor makes you get the code, you've got to spend even more money. You get this access code at the Wileyplus website. A kind student emailed me that the code now costs $83.50 at the site. Wiley also puts in place separate deals with some but not all college bookstores, although then the prices vary a lot at the college bookstore level. Sometimes, depending on how the professor intends to use the WileyPlus resource, you might just ask the professor and get the code, but those cases are rare.

A word of caution and encouragement: This Intermediate Accounting course along with the first one, Financial Accounting, are the two that were traditionally used to weed out students from becoming accounting majors. You've got to spend a lot more time on this course than you usually would for a typical course. Good luck - I wish you the best!

Excellent book, but no solutions!

This is an excellent book, very well written and comprehensive. However, without an instructor or a complete solutions manual, this book is impossible to use! When are authors and publishers going to learn that a beautifully thoughtout set of exercises is utterly worthless in a quantitative subject like Accounting without the solutions available! I'm presently taking a course from this book, however I would never buy this book for personal use - no answers!

Recommend this study guide

It only covers chapters 1-14 as the other reviews has stated, and is a bit expensive.

However, I got an "A" in my intermediate accounting class, and this guide helped a lot.

It don't replace reading the book, but does give a lot of extra problems and exercises (true/false, and multiple choice) to give more practice and understanding for the test.

I found the solutions to be correct and very few mistakes. When a true/false is false, it gives you the reason why, and on the multiple choice, gives you the reason why the correct choice is correct and why the others are wrong.

The brief review does not begin to cover everything in the chapter, and you will not even be able to complete the exercises/problems with just the chapter review. So, don't feel this will replace the textbook.

If you have the money, I recommend this study guide.

Donden, the Dalai Lama's personal physician for some 20 years, fled to India during the 1959 Chinese invasion of his homeland and founded the Tibetan Medical Center at Dharmsala. There, and in private practice, he has built a reputation for successfully treating Indians of all ranks with a holistic system of medicine derived from ancient Buddhist principles. Although that system, detailed in these accessible Univ. of Virginia lectures, emphasizes the integrative treatment certain Western physicians are rediscovering, its tenets on the preordained spiritual aspects of disease remain foreign to our culture. Good book, but glad to be done with it...

This book is a compilation of lectures given by Dr. Donden at the University of Virginia to I'm sure audiences made up of other doctors. I really can't imagine any other crowd staying still for it.

This book is very interesting at times -- not so much other times. Pretty exhaustive lists of how to diagnose different illnesses in patients, which I'm sure is intensely interesting for doctors, but not for me.

The translator and editor is Dr. Hopkins of Virginia, who is renknown for his good work. Dr. Donden was the Dalai Lama's personal physician. The personnel is there, which is why I can't go any lower than four stars, but I'm glad to be done with this book. Probably a better title for serious (very, very serious) students of medicine.

Not as applicable as it seems

If you are truly planning on pursuing the study of Tibetan medicine as a vocation, this book is for you. If you are hoping to glean a few practical tidbits to apply toward a healthy life, it is possible...however, few is the key word. Chapter 11 was the most informative chapter in the book, talking about behavior. It's a great book explaining Tibetan medicine, not applying it.

when I was iving in kathmandu and studying tibetan medicine, the first book my amchi (doctor) recommended was this one... and you know, it really is a great book for introducing the subject... fantastic overview and great layout...

About the Author

Stephen Judge was formerly a Senior Lecturer at London Guildhall University (now London Metropolitan University) where he taught in the areas of company and commercial law, including corporate insolvency and comparative company law (France/England). He holds a law degree from Bristol University and a Dipl�me d'�tudes Approfondies (DEA) in European Community Law from the Universit� Jean Moulin Lyon III. He was a professeur associ� at the Universit� Jean Moulin (1978-79) and was a professeur invit� at the Universit� Ren� Descartes Paris 5 from 1994 until 2001. He is the author of Law for Business Students (Palgrave Macmillan (2006). He is currently an associate lecturer at the University of Surrey.

Excellent book! Drew Hart writes "truth in love" about racism to white Christians in the U.S. using clear examples of personal experiences and knowledge of the Bible, history, and current events. Jesus and his life and teachings are front and center. I will need to re-read to capture the layers. And buy a few more copies to share with friends.

A Book That Keeps Its Promise

Few topics cause the emotional response that racism does, especially when we discuss the wider Christian cultures culpability in perpetuating it. Those of us who are white are especially nervous, not wanting to be characterized as "racist", conjuring images of cross-burning extremists. What we need more than anything is an honest, yet unwavering examination of the history that is offered with the grace and hope that real change can happen.

That is what this book offers, written by someone who has and continues to do the hard work of reconciliation- Drew G.I. Hart. This book is a much needed resource for churches, organizations and individuals who want to see the restoration of the beloved community. Few books are more timely and important as this one. Order it now.

(The only reason I gave this book 4 stars, instead of 5, is because many potential readers dismiss 5 star reviews as being "fanboy" propaganda.)

Finally a book that offers insight to systemic injustice!

I appreciate Drew’s thoughtfulness and bravery in approaching such a challenging subject. This book is a much needed resource to help the church move from viewing incidents in our society as ‘isolated’ or ‘exceptional’ to understanding how they are deeply woven into the systems that structure our society. Through his story and sharp intellect he illuminates the complexities of the racial divide that has plagued the church through time. I deeply appreciate that this is written to faith-based communities. Often resources on race and racism are secular and miss the transformational power of Christ. Drew is able to weave in faith to complex societal issues in a way that invites everyone into the hard work of reconciliation.
