Recreated (The Reawakened Series), by Colleen Houck

From Colleen Houck, New York Times bestselling author of The Tiger’s Curse, comes Recreated, the second book in the epic Egyptian-inspired Reawakened series, in which a seventeen-year-old must literally go to hell to save the love of her life.

Lily Young thought traveling across the globe with a reawakened sun prince was a grand adventure. Now she’s about to embark on the journey of a lifetime.

When Amon and Lily part tragically, he transports himself to the Netherworld—what mortals call hell. Tormented by the loss of his one true love, he’d rather suffer in agony during Lily’s mortal years than fulfill his duty to protect humanity.

Heartbroken, Lily seeks refuge on her grandmother’s farm. Yet she can feel Amon’s pain, and she has been having dreams—dreams of Amon continually suffering.

For before he departed, Amon gave Lily something very special, an item that connects them even though they are worlds apart. Now Lily must use this object to free him, and to free their realms from darkness and utter chaos. She will do whatever it takes.

'Fans of mythological fantasy, as well as those who enjoy take-charge female protagonists, will enjoy spending time with Lily and her companions."--VOYA

"Although many sequels fall short of their predecessors, “Recreated,” book two in the Reawakened series, is wonderfully written and better than its forerunner. No longer just a pampered rich girl, Lily’s personal transformation is invigorating to read about, and the heart-pounding adventures are topped only by the heart-melting romance."--The Deseret News

So Fabulously Unexpected...
By Autumn
In his desire to stay as close to Lily as possible, Amon has turned his back on the afterlife. Instead he wanders somewhere between life and death in the dangerous netherworld.

Now only able to speak to Lily in her dreams, their connection grows stronger still. If they could only find a way to be together once again.

Lily hasn’t been the same since Amon’s death. She feels somehow changed forever and her life is devoid of all colour without him.

She seeks refuge in rural Iowa somehow believing that it might settle her soul. But when Anubis appears and tells her that only she can save Amon from a fate far worse than death, she knows that she’s in for a fight like no other.

She must traverse Lakes of Fire and Mires of Despair to find Amon. Lead by his brothers, mystical creatures and Amon’s heart scarab, she embarks on journey of transformation where the very world lies in the balance.
Recreated is another unexpected gem from Colleen Houck! After the whirlwind of Reawakened, I wasn’t quite sure of where she would take her readers next - and it’s so much more than I ever imagined.

She masterfully crafts a mystical world where a young girl finds the incredible strength within herself to save the boy that she loves – regardless of the consequences.

Watching Lily transform from just a privileged New York City teenager to a fierce warrior is as terrifying as it is thrilling. This is her story. The story of her love, the story of her heart and the story of her recreation – and it will leave you longing for more…

Couldn't put it down.
By Amazon Customer
I am surprised I've been so drawn in by these characters and am cheering them on. I have to admit I was a little skeptical that I was going to like this story after being so drawn into The Tigers Curse Series and loving those characters so much. I do love the action and the determination of our heroine(s) and look forward to seeing how the story plays out. A must read from the beginning story. I was skeptical about this book after reading some reviews...wondering if we were going to have a similar story line as in the Tiger Brothers. I am happy that it's an even bigger twist and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Kept Me On My Toes.
By Galilea Mickey
The second installment of the Reawakened series left me breathless. From the first page, which is in Amon's POV, till the last, Lily's POV, I was hooked. This book brings back likable characters from the first book and Houck somehow makes you love them even more. Other characters are introduced and are just as entertaining (I loved Horus!). I can count on one hand the ones I disliked. I can't wait for the next and final book.

Spoiler alert! Despite Amon not being in this book as much as he was in the first, its not so disappointing. I mean, we get gods, and lets not forget his brothers Asten and Ahmose. Amon's absence couldn't be overlooked but between meetings with gods and goddesses mentioned in the first book and kisses from Horus, it was pretty easy to get lost in chapters until Amon resurfaces.

So many mistakes!
By angelika
Every homework I am assigned from this book AT LEAST one answer from the back is incorrect. It is very frustrating when I come up with the right answer and then waste one after hour trying to figure out what I did wrong! I can't rely on the practice exercises because I never know if I'm wrong or the book. I never knew it was possible for a book that costs this much to have SO MANY MISTAKES. If you charge students that much, can't you pay someone to verify that so this book can be reliable?? And by the way, I know that the book is wrong because I asked a tutor and my professor to take a look and confirm. So I'm not just blaming my mistakes on the book. This book was required for my course so I had no choice.

By Amazon Customer
Here is a textbook that I actually read for the class. Many students struggled in my inorganic chemistry 2 class and I got an A by actually reading and doing the homework problems. My professor used the powerpoints that are included by the publisher and although it is the same material as the textbook, as expected, they are condensed. The textbook gives the full story and gives practical examples. The practical examples were very interesting to me and its these examples that makes students actually know **practical** things when they leave college.

I purchased this magazine 14 years ago, but lost it when I left CA to move to AZ for cheaper rent and a better job. This magazine gives the best description of the origins of Boba Fett and gives a very detailed picture of the Mandalorian Skull.

Ghosts of Everest: The Search for Mallory & Irvine, by Jochen Hemmleb, Larry A. Johnson, Eric R. Simonson

GHOSTS OF EVEREST unravels one of the most puzzling and compelling adventure mysteries of all time. On June 6, 1924, George Leigh Mallory and Andrew Comyn Irvine were only a few hundred feet short of becoming the first men to reach the highest spot on earth when they simply walked into the mist, never to be seen again. Did they reach the summit of Mount Everest - nearly three decades before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay? This is the meticulous report of both the 1924 British Expedition and the 1999 Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition which found George Mallory's body and answers to the questions that have plagued historians and mountaineers alike: Did they make it? And, if they did, what happened to them?

"...a work of historic importance that reads like a detective thriller..." (Publishers Weekly)

Amazon.com Review
For three quarters of a century, adventure enthusiasts around the globe have speculated about the fate of British mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. Did they reach the peak of Mount Everest before disappearing on June 6, 1924? How did they die? What was their fatal mistake? In 1999, the Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition set out to answer these questions by retracing the steps of the doomed climbers, and in The Ghosts of Everest, they share their findings. William Nothdurft has gracefully woven the testimonies of expedition members Jochen Hemmleb, Eric Simonson, and Larry Johnson, all the while counterpointing the modern ascent with a captivating reconstruction of what befell the earlier one. There are also stunning photographs, which manage to be inspiring and beautiful and gruesome--occasionally all at once. And while it's impossible to establish exactly what happened to Mallory and Irvine, this account is persuasive enough to fascinate rock climbers and couch potatoes alike. --Melissa Asher

From Publishers Weekly
One of the great mysteries of modern exploration and adventure is whether British climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine reached Mount Everest's summit on their pioneering 1924 expedition in which both men vanished. Were they the first to scale the world's highest spot, decades before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made their successful ascent in 1953? On the 75th anniversary of the ill-fated duo's disappearance, a 1999 Everest expeditionAwith Simonson as team leader, Hemmleb as historical adviser and Johnson as team coordinatorAattempted to retrace Mallory and Irvine's probable route and solve the mystery. Incredibly, they discovered Mallory's bodyAremarkably intact, badly bruised and with a broken legAfrozen in the snow. In a taut narrative that skillfully jump-cuts between the 1924 Mallory/Irvine expedition and their own, the authors make a compelling case that Mallory fell to his death and that he appears to have been roped to Irvine, who also fell and was injured. (Irvine's body was reportedly sighted by a Chinese climber in 1975, but this awaits further proof.) Did Mallory and Irvine make it to Everest's summit? "It is more likely than had previously been thought that they did make itAbut it is still far from certain," conclude the authors. They base their analysis on their findings atop Everest, including personal letters and an inventory of oxygen tanks they found in Mallory's pockets. Their report, a work of historic importance that reads like a detective thriller, includes a moving foreword by Mallory's daughter, Clare Mallory Millikan, plus 100 photographs (80 in color, 20 sepia) illustrating both the 1999 search expedition and Mallory's 1924 attempt. First serial to Outside; author tour. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
YA-Here is the inside story of the search for the long-lost British mountaineer. Mallory, one of the most accomplished high-altitude climbers of his time, and his companion disappeared from the slopes of Mount Everest in 1924 when they were close to becoming the first humans to reach the highest spot on Earth. In this skillfully crafted story, readers learn how Hemmleb, the young German graduate student and historiographer of Everest expeditions, linked up with Larry Johnson, another Everest enthusiast, and high-altitude expedition leader Eric Simonson in 1999 to put to rest the mystery of what became of Mallory. Stories of the original trek are intertwined with details of the modern research expedition. This beautifully composed, slightly oversized volume with heavy glossy pages has copious, lustrous photographs, including many from the earlier expedition, and several maps that perfectly support the text. This absorbing book evokes a reverence for Mallory and all those high-altitude mountaineers who have succeeded him in the climb to the roof of the world.

Unraveling the Mystery of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine
By timcon1964
Nearly half a century after making the first documented ascent of Mt. Everest, Edmund Hillary said of George Mallory's 1924 climb, "It would have been a just reward for Mallory if he had reached the summit." Ghosts of Everest, written by William Nothdurft (based on the accounts of Jochen Hemleb, Larry Johnson, and Eric Simonson), describes the 1999 expedition that sought evidence of Mallory's fate. The book's dust jacket proclaims that this expedition "found answers to the question that has plagued historians and mountaineers alike: Did they make it? And if they did, what happened to them?" Key interpretive portions of the text are informed by the conviction, or the wish, that Mallory and his companion Andrew Irvine did make it; but this volume leaves us, not with answers, but with new evidence on which to ground new or old hypotheses.

Nothdurft begins by briefly recounting Mallory and Irvine's 1924 climb and their mysterious disappearance. Then he discusses Hemleb and Johnson's interest in unraveling the mystery, and describes how that interest eventually led to the 1999 expedition. He devotes four chapters to the planning and organization of the 1999 expedition. This is perhaps rather more space than some readers might have wished; but it is useful to understand the scope of the financial and logistical underpinnings of this venture, and to realize that Simonson had managed to enlist in it some of the world's best climbers. The book then provides a good overview of the 1924 British expedition.

Nothdurft describes the dramatic discovery of Mallory's body. This discovery began to fill in some of the gaps in our knowledge about his final climb. The limited extent of his injuries indicated that he had not fallen from the top of the Northeast Ridge. Tied around his waist was a rope, which suggested that he and Irvine had been together at the time of the fall. He was not wearing oxygen equipment. Also missing was a photograph of his wife Ruth, which he had planned to leave on the summit. But he was carrying letters, some of which bore notes relating to the supplies for his attempt on the summit.

In analyzing the evidence, Nothdurft has chosen to substitute for the traditional question, "Is there evidence that Mallory and Irvine summitted?" the alternative question, "Is there evidence that they did not summit?" And he answers this question in the negative. This approach opens the way to many possible interpretations. In evaluating evidence, Nothdurft customarily adopts the interpretation most consistent with a successful climb. He would have readers believe that Mallory and Irvine each carried three full, or nearly full, oxygen bottles on that fateful day. If they carried only two bottles, they would have had oxygen for only eight hours--not enough time for them to reach the summit. But three bottles would have given them 12 hours of oxygen, thus significantly improving their prospects. Mallory's notes list five nearly full bottles. Do these represent all the full bottles? There must have been more if each climber could have had three bottles. Ghosts makes great play of a list of six partial bottles. But the oxygen in these appears to have been about 90% exhausted; so that one of these bottles would have given a climber only 20 or 30 extra minutes of oxygen. Most challenging to the argument in Ghosts is Mallory's note to his colleague Odell, "we'll probably go on two cylinders--but it's a bloody load for climbing." If two were a "bloody load," what would three be?

Mallory was apparently not wearing goggles when he fell. Nothdurft believes this demonstrates that Mallory was descending the North Face in the dusk, and sees this as proof that the pair each carried three oxygen bottles, because the oxygen in two bottles would have been exhausted earlier, forcing them to descend in daylight. Another explanation is readily available. A few days earlier, another British climber, Edward Norton, had removed his goggles in order to see where to place his feet--snow blindness was a danger, but falling off the mountain was a greater danger. The accumulation of snow on the mountain may be seen as evidence that Mallory and Irvine failed. Norton described an abundance of "powdery snow into which I sank to the knee or even to the waist, and which was yet not of a consistency to support me in the event of a slip." The snow on the summit pyramid could have been worse. Mallory had intended to place a photograph of his wife Ruth on the summit. Nothdurft implies that, since this photo was not among Mallory's effects, he must have left it at the summit. Quite possibly, he left it at the highest point he did reach, even if it were not the summit.

Two members of the 1999 expedition (Conrad Anker and Dave Hahn) did climb to the summit. They found an oxygen bottle evidently left by Mallory and Irvine--but it was below the First Step, and thus does not place them close to the summit. Several aspects of the 1999 climb merit attention. First, the climbers left their high camp at 2:00 a.m. and did not reach the summit until 2:50 p.m. Thus, the climb took over 12 hours. Second, Anker surmounted the Second Step easily on this occasion. When he attempted to repeat this success in filming The Wildest Dream eight years later, he nearly fell down the North Face. How easily Mallory could have mastered the Second Step would have depended on conditions at the time. Third, Anker and Hahn, descending the mountain in the dark, were able to rappel down the Second Step. Was this option open to Mallory and Irvine?

Did Mallory and Irvine reach the summit? Nothdurft's conclusion: "The plain truth is that there is still no definite answer." To this reviewer, the evidence suggests that Mallory expected to reach the summit in eight hours. If the ascent were to take much longer than that, the return to the high camp could not have been completed until after dark--a very risky proposition. If Mallory thought the ascent could be completed in eight hours, this could explain his inclination to carry only two oxygen bottles. Two bottles would provide an eight-hour supply of oxygen--and the 1924 climbers apparently believed that oxygen was not essential when descending. But the experience of most modern climbers suggests that it would have taken Mallory and Irvine twelve or more hours to attain the summit. At what point did they realize that they might not have sufficient oxygen to reach the summit, or enough daylight to return to their high camp? And how did they respond? We may never know the answers. In any case, few would dispute Nothdurft's argument that what really matters is "the scale of their achievement given the resources available to them, their astonishing strength and grit, the indomitability of their desire."

Although it does not solve the mystery, this book is of great value to those interested in the 1924 and 1999 expeditions. If offers a dramatic account of the discovery of Mallory's body, and provides high quality photographs of the 1924 and 1999 climbers, the effects found on Mallory's body, and views of Mt. Everest and nearby peaks.

Wish I had Been There!
By Christian S. Coan
Eric Simonson and I were great friends in College and unlike many of our classmates, he has not wasted his life on silly pursuits, but rather has furthered our respect for and understanding of one of mankind's greatest quests: the conquering of Everest.
Even in college, Eric was an accomplished Climber, Skier, Mountaineer, Geologist and Rescuer.
This riveting account of the discovery of Mallory's body answers many questions about the climber's last Summit attempt. and reveals many details about the climber's abilities and equipment.
We still have questions, but Simonson's book brings us a sense of closure we have heretofore not had regarding Mallory's climb.
A great book and a great adventure brought to us by a great Climber and Good Friend.

Terrifiic!
By CuriousCat
I listened to this years ago and it remains one of my favorite nonfiction books. At the time I had zero interest in mountain climbing (still not interested, though some of the personalities involved now intrigue me). I selected the book because it was on clearance and I believe it's important to learn new things, even if they aren't an area of special interest. To my astonishment, from the start I was completely drawn into the story. It actually isn't about mountain climbing, it's about trying to find a lost expedition. I owned it on tape and have now gotten the CD so I can reacquaint myself with this mystery.

Comic-book artists are constantly on the lookout for sources for creating those super-human muscles, and now MUSCLES IN MOTION is ready to heed their cry for help. While most anatomy and life-drawing books focus on average bodies, MUSCLES IN MOTION looks at the musculature of bodybuilders and athletes, and then builds on those physiques to create exaggerated forms that are still strikingly dynamic and realistic. With more than 800 action drawings taken directly from the sketchbooks of legendary artist Glenn Fabry, plus Fabry's remarkable commentary on those drawings, this is the single best book on action anatomy for comic-book artists, beginning, intermediate, and advanced.

Clueless
By Amazon Customer
I have just finished the book of Glenn Fabry "Muscles in Motion". The cover of the book was very promising and I thus have pre-order it. I was quite disappointed when I received it. I expected this book to be a kind of step by step guide to draw muscles or at the very least, a book which could teach me a trick or two from a pro. Nada! This book contains quasi no instruction. It's even hard to explain the contents of this book.

They are hundreds of drawings made from freeze-frame images from a videotape. Pages and pages of images of bodybuilders or dancers following each others like a broken down animation. The drawings are too sketchy and small to be a book of references and Fabry doesn't explain anything. I really don't know who would be interested in buying this book but I prefer the more easier approch to figure drawing and muscles from Loomis, Jack Hamm or even Bridgman.

N.B.: I took the liberty of scanning a few pages from the book. You be the judge...

Muscles In Motion
By Tracy Lindsey
I am a professional artist, and figure drawing is a favorite subject. I have collected many 'how-to" books on figure drawing over the years, and, therefore, have seen many systems of innovative anatomical figure construction. With that said, I must say that Muscles In Motion is a disappointment.

Although there are some quite good individual drawings by the author,Glenn Fabry, the vast majority of the book is drawings from photographs of female bodybuilders in posing or exercise routines. Fabry draws well, but his approach shows little to no

insight into the constructive nature of the figure, which I see as the main reason for purchasing a 'how-to" book on this subject in the first place. Also, I find it strange that the author has used, almost exclusively, female bodybuilders as his prime models for this subject. Yes, men and women do have the same basic muscular system, with the skeletal structure accounting for the greater differences. However, in a treatise on the human muscular system in motion, I feel that using a more traditional approach with the male physique as the primary example would be more appropriate for the subject, while using to a lesser degree, female examples to show the similarities. The female form is absolutely beautiful, but using drawings of the female form in its muscular extreme to illustrate muscular motion in general, I find quite atypical for the subject matter.Had I been able to see an excerpt from this book first, I would not have been interested.

No muscles at all
By Mike Jensen
This was not what I expected. There is no instruction provided as to anatomy or musculature, just many sketches mostly from a female workout tape. The "muscles" were non-descript. Also, if you're considering this for a younger artist, several of the sketches have annotation that they were drawn from a "stripper" tape and are somewhat provocative both in content and "clever quips" as commentary by the artist; inappropriate to my way of thinking. I've returned the book to amazon.com despite having to eat the postage.

The Virtue of Selfishness: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition, by Ayn Rand

A collection of essays that sets forth the moral principles of Objectivism, Ayn Rand's controversial, groundbreaking philosophy.

Since their initial publication, Rand's fictional works—Anthem, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged—have had a major impact on the intellectual scene. The underlying theme of her famous novels is her philosophy, a new morality—the ethics of rational self-interest—that offers a robust challenge to altruist-collectivist thought.

Known as Objectivism, her divisive philosophy holds human life—the life proper to a rational being—as the standard of moral values and regards altruism as incompatible with man's nature. In this series of essays, Rand asks why man needs morality in the first place, and arrives at an answer that redefines a new code of ethics based on the virtue of selfishness.

The Objectivist's Morality of Selfishness
By EdwardTheMonarch
"Ethics is an objective necessity of man's survival-not by the grace of the supernatural nor of your neighbors nor of your whims, but by the grace of reality and the nature of life." says Ayn Rand at the beginning of the book.
This book--The Virtue of Selfishness-A New Concept of Egoism--blows my mind when I read it. Ayn Rand, the author of this book, is so good at expressing her beliefs in moral and ethical issues. The idea expressed in this book is relatively alien to me because of Catholic school's social teaching. However, Ayn Rand's ideas are not alien to American society: Ayn Rand's ideas were mostly opposite to Jesus' teaching, yet her book was popular among Republicans, especially those proclaim to be Christian conservatives (Ayn Rand was an atheist and she was pro-choice.)
However, her writing in this book does speak the truth. Ayn Rand writes, "An organism's life is its standard by value: that which furthers its life is the good, that which threatens it is the evil." It is true because throughout this book she supports and advocates a rational, objective "selfishness" rather than a selfishness based on one's whim. For example: the November 2015 Paris attacks, which resulted in the death of 129 innocent people, was a human tragedy. Therefore, according to this book, the "selfish" thing to do is to stand up against the terrorists because they threaten the human life rather than indifference which is based on whim. I believe that is the true interpretation of Ayn Rand's philosophy that was addressed in the Virtue of Selfishness.
Overall, the book is extremely appealing and worth reading. I strongly recommend this book. In addition, I had to look up some words in this book because it involves philosophical jargons.

Ayn Rand is a heroine of many conservatives. Her life story is dramatic, starting in Russia. I first encountered her writing in the 50's at the University of Texas in Austin. At that time I had no real politic convictions and studied in Plan Two which was definitely not a conservative learning group of bright students. There about 300 of us in the freshman class of about 4,000 students, men and women. I moved to Dallas after graduation to do a masters program. My political thinking was influenced by the general intellectual environment in Dallas in the summer of 1963. I was in the downtown Dallas area at the moment of John Kennedy's assassination -- a tragic event that had a strong effect on my life and the lives of huge numbers of the world's population. In January, 1965 I boarded a military bus leaving basic air force training in San Antonio Texas and on the bus station book rack picked up this book. Over the next 7 hours on the road trip to Amarillo Air Force Base where I was going to start a study course in air force personnel. After having spent the prior 6 weeks in a totally regimented military experience, the intellectual experience of reading this book was heavy. I have discussed this book over the years. Many followers of Ayn Rand don't know that she was a non Christian atheist. It's pretty clear from reading The Virtue of Selfishness that she doesn't have much sympathy for the less fortunate in civilization. She is a pure capitalist. This book does a great job of explaining Ayn Rand's philosophy.

Life changer
By luis
A great start book to get to know Ayn Rand and her philosophy. This book will also teach you how to think critically, use logic and will make you reconsider many things that you once believed or did unquestioningly. In this book Ayn Rand destroys collectivism and shows through logical and very good arguments why selfishness is better and why although selfishness is categorized or deemed as something negative nowadays, it is actually absolutely fine and moral to be selfish. This woman is such a great writer. This book changed my life. I mean that!

Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain, by Charles R. Cross

It has been twenty years since Kurt Cobain died by his own hand in April 1994; it was an act of will that typified his short, angry, inspired life. Veteran music journalist Charles R. Cross fuses his intimate knowledge of the Seattle music scene with his deep compassion for his subject in this extraordinary story of artistic brilliance and the pain that extinguished it. Based on more than four hundred interviews; four years of research; exclusive access to Cobain's unpublished diaries, lyrics, and family photos; and a wealth of documentation, Heavier Than Heaven traces Cobain's life from his early days in a double-wide trailer outside of Aberdeen, Washington, to his rise to fame, success, and the adulation of a generation. Charles Cross has written a preface for this new edition, in which he recounts some of the events regarding Kurt Cobain and this book in the past two decades since his death.

Amazon.com Review
The art of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was all about his private life, but written in a code as obscure as T.S. Eliot's. Now Charles Cross has cracked the code in the definitive biography Heavier Than Heaven, an all-access pass to Cobain's heart and mind. It reveals many secrets, thanks to 400-plus interviews, and even quotes Cobain's diaries and suicide notes and reveals an unreleased Nirvana masterpiece. At last we know how he created, how lies helped him die, how his family and love life entwined his art--plus, what the heck "Smells Like Teen Spirit" really means. (It was graffiti by Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna after a double date with Dave Grohl, Cobain, and the "over-bored and self-assured" Tobi Vail, who wore Teen Spirit perfume; Hanna wrote it to taunt the emotionally clingy Cobain for wearing Vail's scent after sex--a violation of the no-strings-attached dating ethos of the Olympia, Washington, "outcast teen" underground. Cobain's stomach-churning passion for Vail erupted in six or so hit tunes like "Aneurysm" and "Drain You.")

Cross uncovers plenty of news, mostly grim and gripping. As a teen, Cobain said he had "suicide genes," and his clan was peculiarly defiant: one of his suicidal relatives stabbed his own belly in front of his family, then ripped apart the wound in the hospital. Cobain was contradictory: a sweet, popular teen athlete and sinister berserker, a kid who rescued injured pigeons and laughingly killed a cat, a talented yet astoundingly morbid visual artist. He grew up to be a millionaire who slept in cars (and stole one), a fiercely loyal man who ruthlessly screwed his oldest, best friends. In fact, his essence was contradictions barely contained. Cross, the coauthor of Nevermind: Nirvana, the definitive book about the making of the classic album, puts numerous Cobain-generated myths to rest. (Cobain never lived under a bridge--that Aberdeen bridge immortalized in the 12th song on Nevermind was a tidal slough, so nobody could sleep under it.) He gives the fullest account yet of what it was like to be, or love, Kurt Cobain. Heavier Than Heaven outshines the also indispensable Come As You Are. It's the deepest book about pop's darkest falling star. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
"And there had never quite been a rock star like Kurt Cobain," Cross eulogizes in this celebrity biography. Unfortunately, Cross, former editor of the Rocket, a Northwestern music and entertainment weekly, never proves his claim. Instead, Cobain's story, culled from more than 400 interviews with friends, family and colleagues and exclusive access to Cobain's unpublished diaries, sounds wholly ordinary, from boilerplate adolescent bitterness about his parents' divorce ("I hate Mom, I hate Dad. Dad hates Mom, Mom hates Dad. It simply makes you want to be so sad") and malt liquor, punk rock-adorned angst to the tawdry details of his drug addiction. "Even in this early stage of his career, Kurt had already begun the process of retelling his own story in a manner that formed a separate self," writes Cross as he carefully dispels some of Cobain's self-made myths, including claims of living under a bridge, "tales... about his constant abuse at the hands of Aberdeen's rednecks" and harboring an aversion to fame. The many unenlightening observations are often painted thick with sensationalism; other times, Cross trawls the bottom for sources whose credibility and relevance are dubious at best. (For instance, he interviews Cobain's drug-addicted ex-babysitter, Cali, and some of her girlfriends, yielding a depressing she-said-he-said of Kurt's final days.) Conspiracy theorists will speculate about the conditions under which Cross gained access to Cobain's private journals. Complete with gossip and meticulous references, the biography will catch the devotees, though, like junk food, it may leave them feeling unnourished. 16 pages b&w photos. (Aug. 15) Forecast: Released on the 10th anniversary of Come As You Are and with radio giveaways, this book will sell well.

From Library Journal
"I'm going to be a superstar musician, kill myself, and go out in a flame of glory." So spoke 14-year-old Kurt Cobain, who could not possibly have anticipated how prophetic his statement would become. Cobain, as leader of the band Nirvana, almost single-handedly wrestled alternative rock into the mainstream via the group's massive 1991 album, Nevermind. Three years later, Cobain rebelled against the phenomenal fame he had ambitiously sought and, physically and psychologically decimated by heroin addiction and a mysterious stomach ailment, fatally shot himself at age 27. Former editor of Seattle's influential music magazine the Rocket, Cross followed the Nirvana juggernaut from the beginning, and though he nearly bludgeons the reader with tales of Cobain's debauched excesses, one is still drawn to the artist's forceful personality. Cross transcends Christopher Sandford's 1995 Cobain biography, Kurt Cobain (Carroll & Graf, 1996) by conducting over 400 interviews and gaining access not only to the singer's widow, Courtney Love, but also to the musician's private journals, which provide fascinating insights into Cobain's troubled mind. The sordid details of Cobain's addiction and suicide and Cross's occasionally over-the-top dramatics are sometimes more than the reader can stomach, but ultimately this is a carefully crafted and compelling tragedy that serves as a necessary foil to Michael Azerrad's authorized Nirvana biography, Come As You Are (Doubleday, 1993). Major issues
By A Customer
The mainstream press has praised it to high heaven as the Cobain book to buy. However, there are some major issues here. It was a collaboration between Courtney Love and Charles Cross, which is a red flag off the bat. Love is blatantly trying to change history in it, and paint herself and her late husband in a totally different light. Some of it is based on diaries Kurt left behind. Diaries that could have been easily manipulated at some point or another. It's no secret that Kurt was prepared to divorce Courtney before he died. She admits it herself in taped conversations with Tom Grant in 1994 and 1995. People around them have also spoken out about the turmoil between the two at the time. Yet this book wants us to believe that they had a great marriage. Remaining Nirvana members are also accusing Courtney Love of changing history and pasting herself into things so they benefit her. Clearly a slap in the face to them, as well as Kurt's memory. Cross also likes to take speculation and present them the same way as he does facts. He writes of Kurt's last morning like he was actually there. Heavier Than Heaven has some major flaws, so read this book with caution.

Distills The Life That Was Inside Of Him
By Mike Stone
Early on you get a good idea of the course Cross is going to follow, when in the Author's Note he casually, but shroudedly, admits to a childhood akin to Kurt's. At least he plays fair with the reader, admitting off the top that he might be predisposed to looking for suicidal tendencies in his subject. But the reader should also take this as a warning: this is not a fan's-eye-view of Nirvana's chart-topping success (Dave Grohl makes brief and scattered appearances throughout the book), but a gloves-off biography of their tortured leader. Read in that light, it is mostly a success. Mostly.
Cross' greatest strength is the depth and breadth of his research. Apparently Courtney Love, Kurt's widow, gave Cross extensive access to Kurt's personal effects. She also sat for repeated lengthy interviews, as did many of the other notable players in Kurt's life. This kind of access gives Cross an insight into his subject that those of us who read all the Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine profiles of the man never got. It's revelatory, to be sure. For example, he is able to quote liberally from Kurt's diary, which lets the reader into Kurt's head. It offers such revelations as the following, which describes his concession to the inevitable path of becoming a junkie: "if I feel like a junkie as it is [due to stomach pains], I may as well be one." Or, in Cross' greatest discovery, he describes a long lost video of Kurt bathing his daughter Frances, in a scene of seemingly domestic tranquility. The camera focuses on father and daughter for a long moment, and then abruptly pans around the bathroom. Cross, an observant viewer, notes that in the toothbrush holder, instead of a toothbrush, is a syringe. His commentary on this image, how it destroys the conventional familial image established moments before, is some of his best work.
Sometimes, however, Cross can go a bit overboard with the facts. Just because he found out a little tidbit like, "[Kurt's] favorite [infant] game was peekaboo, his first tooth appeared at eight months, and his first dozen words were, 'coco, momma, dadda, ball, toast, bye-bye, hi, baby, me, love, hot dog, and kittie,'" doesn't mean it needs to be included. Too often Cross recounts, in laundry list-like prose, trivial facts like this, which really do very little in terms of illuminating the life. It comes across more as showing off his knowledge.
He also, at times, can't help indulging into a bit of pop psychoanalysis, where pop psychoanalysis is not welcome. In Cross' hands a picture of the Cobain family, taken when Kurt was 6, supposedly does a precise job of predicting the sorrow to come. Based exclusively on body language on posture. The picture is included here for your perusal. I, for one, didn't see anything near to what Cross saw. He also, at one point, compares Kurt's image in early band photos to "Christ in Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'". I suppose one sees what one wants to see.
And anyone who lived through the period, like I did, will find dubious statements such as the following: "'The Cobain baby' was as talked about across lunch counters and supermarket checkout lines as the Lindbergh baby had been decades before." The Vanity Fair article that revealed Courtney had used heroin during her pregnancy was big news, true. But only within the community. It was not nearly the global tabloid scandal that Cross makes it out to be. Misleading analysis like the preceding calls into question every other statement Cross has to make. It does a lot of work undermining his credibility.
Further compounding the problem is Cross' hit-or-miss writing. For the most part he utilizes an objective, almost journalistic prose style, laying the facts at the reader's feet without unnecessary ornamentation. But every once in a while he will indulge in odd analogies: "Like senior citizens going to a dentists' appointment, the band made sure they were early for this all-important show." Was that bit of superfluous style really necessary? These bits appear out of nowhere in the text, and come off as if the writer had a burst of inspiration, albeit a rather dull one. Though, even when he's playing things by the book, Cross is still prone to blunders. He clumsily describes the *melody* of the song "About a Girl" as "sweet, slow, and *melodic*".
Despite the numerous complaints I've outlined above, Cross' book is still consistently readable; although I suspect that the power of the story being told has a lot to do with that. I've always thought that a biography should be judged on how the author was able to stay out of the way, and let the events of the life present themselves. In this case, Cross is, like I noted above, mostly a success. His reputation as a respected music and entertainment journalist is apparently well-earned, despite some missteps along the way, and his objectivity is very rarely questionable. That being said, his greatest feat, paradoxically, is the way he handles Kurt's final days. Much of it of course is speculation, for no one but Kurt knows how it all went down. But what Cross comes up with to tell this part of the tale is moving and powerful, without ever pandering to melodrama. The final moments are recounted with credibility, pathos, sorrow, and, most importantly, empathy. The book breaks from being a standard biography at this point, adding untold emotion to these well-written scenes. Cross even manages to tie up the book's (and, consequently, the life's) main themes. These final pages do yeomen's work making up for any errors Cross has made along the way, and, ultimately, they make the book a worthwhile read.

Interesting revelations, but poorly written
By Eric Evans
I bought this book with great hopes, but about halfway through it I became thoroughly disgusted with Cross's writing. For a biographer, he takes too many liberties when filling in the unknowns in Cobain's life. For example, the bit about Cobain walking around the entire day after first getting laid, smelling his fingers. Please. Cross ruins a potentially good story with fabrications like this.
Cross also neglects to write about Cobain the artist. We learn nothing of his creative process, of his long hours spent practicing guitar, nothing from anyone he's played with. This is too bad because to understand Cobain's life, one must appreciate the role that art played in his life. You cannot remove the music from Cobain's life and tell the story of an ordinary man, because Cobain lived and breathed music for most of his life. Alas, we are left to figure out for ourselves when events in Cobain's life occurred relative to his musical achievements. The only glimpse we get into Cobain's art is when we learn about the woman who inspired several songs on Nevermind, a token account when considering the consistent brilliance of Cobain's songwriting.
The worst problem with this book by far is that Cross relied too heavily on Courtney Love's version of events. This leads to numerous errors in the book, for example, we are told that Love helped Cobain pen Pennyroyal Tea, but any bootlegger knows that Cobain first performed this song in late 1991, before he ever met Love. One can only wonder how many other inaccuracies sprout from Love's egocentric retelling of events, events for which there is only Love's side to the story. For this reason, I consider virtually one third of the book entirely worthless, since it is based on interviews with a person proven to lack credibility.
All in all, it's worth reading, but I don't consider it a worthy biography of Cobain. The John Lennon of generation X deserves a more professional biography, but for now we will have to make do with the shoddy journalism that plagues so much of the literature on Cobain.
