Get this if you want to understand basic immunology

This book is a must have for someone struggling with immunology (be honest, that means everyone, because at some point everyone will struggle with it). It will help build the fundamental understanding any future doctor, nurse, or other healthcare provider should have. As a nursing student I was so happy with this book and the key concepts it helped me to understand. The section on allergies and autoimmunity I found to be done very well, especially since those are subjects that few teachers I have met would discuss.

I love these series. It makes a mundane topic an interesting read. It's all basic essentials and that's how one needs to look at it. Before you make the diagnoses you have to know the normal then one can analyze the abnormal.

This is an excellent book for medical students and whoever is interested in getting an outline/overview of what immunology is about. You may not get the most out of this book if you just want to use it for boards. But you will find it very useful if you use it as a review/summary book for immunology or if you want to know the basics of immunology. In this regard, therefore, it is a short and concise book and great for its value.

Excellent Complement of Quantum Mechanics

The book "Essential Quantum Mechanics" is an excellent complement to standard textbooks on quantum mechanics. It shows a very good insight into the quantum states, the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, the operators, and the observables. It has an excellent treatment of the subject of bras and kets, and matrix representation of vectors and operators. The book has helped me in better understanding these mathematical computations. The book is not a stand-alone text on quantum mechanics for it does not have all the historical background and experiments that led to Q.M but it is an excellent reference that can help clarify concepts and computations, and for this it deserves a very high rating.

Conceptual introduction for people with math

I'm a professional statistician with a PhD in math. How can someone like me -- who is not interested in solving the Schrodinger equation in multiple settings -- attain a conceptual understanding of quantum mechanics at a much better level than afforded by popularizations? I looked through my university physics library, dipped into several texts, and then discovered Bowman. He does a brilliant job of using considerable math (but all basically undergrad level) to help convey both the flavor and the concepts of quantum mechanics. He even warns about the unbalanced picture a beginner will get from formal intro texts that _do_ spend much of their space solving the time-independent Schrodinger equation. If you are quantitatively somewhat sophisticated and your interest in QM, like mine, is mainly intellectual, this may be the place to both start and stop.

Great supplementary text for self-study

This book nicely complements standard QM textbooks and is very useful for self-study. The author explains clearly and in some detail a number of fundamental concepts (such as superposition, quantum state versus different representations of a quantum state, probability and uncertainty, time evolution and unitary transformations) and conceptual subtleties that are often insufficiently addressed in typical textbooks. The presentation is rigorous enough to be clear and useful without going overboard mathematically. The book is short so you can work through it fairly quickly.

Of particular note are his splendid explanations of the role of complex numbers in quantum states, global versus relative phase (describing in detail how and when relative phase can alter probabilities) as well as time evolution and how unitary operators work. He nicely puts this together in section 11.2.2. Unitarity and Phase Revisited, where he goes through a simple example showing how time evolution of a state in superposition introduces relative phases that alter probabilities of measurement outcomes. It's worth every penny!

Great book! Great quality. Arrived on time. Book can teach you how water works as a living breathing substance. Pretty amazing read. Will change your outlook on the things around you and how we as a species need to change how we treat our water and aquatic systems.

Thick, yet perceptive

I have found this book not only hard to read but also spattered with tones of religion that were disturbing. It was difficult to wade through. And yet I have to say that Schauberger's theories about a natural energy in water are very perceptive and demonstrate an awareness of river systems and water movement understood by only a handful of people still today. I have worked on river restoration and with water and have done so for a number of years (...) and was looking to increase my understanding of the natural energy in water. Does it absorb into the body more readily? Is it healthier for us to drink? Does it cleanse itself of pollutants as some suggest? I didn't find the answers int this though I found these suggestions. I have since experimented with products based on Schauberger's work and am most intrigued with what I experience.

As I say the book is thick and deep and difficult to read, at least that's my experience of it. And yet it contains perceptions that the serious student of water will wish to learn. Not for the novice or casual inquisitor.

Great Book for Anyone Who Is Living on Earth

While I was drawn to this title in desperation after having a coworker try to ruin my career and sanity with gossip, this book is actually good for anybody and everybody. The best part of this book was when the author directed certain readers to another book (Codependent No More) prior to going further in his book. That was a great suggestion for me, and I feel like I wouldn't have gotten the full effect of this book without reading that one first. The author explains the complicated nature of invalidation and gives the reader tools to a) keep an invalidator from invalidating you; b) recognize the invalidator in yourself and understand not only why you get like that but what you can do to stop yourself; and c) learn to have some measure of healthy compassion for the invalidators you come across.

I spent 90% of a three day weekend on these two books. I can say that, after trying unsuccessfully to handle stress, anxiety and depression through multiple attempts with medication, food, alcohol, etc - that I have felt more calm, happier, and more "present" than I have, maybe ever. I also have no anxiety about going to work tomorrow. The thoughts and memories of previous insults, bullying, abuse, and even little slights (as well as things I've said and done myself that were invalidating to others) seem to come up in my mind like they always do, but I've been able to see them for what they were and calmly put them to the side. It's too soon to really tell how this will change my life or anything, but I'll know the next time I'm faced with a difficult situation (probably tomorrow, haha).

How to break a cycle of Mean and how to not slip into the cycle yourself.

When I was a teenager dealing with teenager type people and struggling with some bullying, my mother pulled this book off of her shelf and gave it to me. I found it incredible that someone else knew exactly how I was feeling and what i was experiencing. At that time I read it to learn how to deal with mean people. Later as I grew older I would turn to this book in various situations- at work, with a husband that I finally divorced and so on.

Now as I am raising my own children and they are struggling with situations that are similar but think mom knows nothing- I am passing this book down to my children.

What I really like about this book is that it is also about looking at yourself and being sure that you don't slip yourself into the cycle by how you react to situations. It helps you be aware of why you might be considered mean by others and provides you an alternative method of handling situations.

This book is short and sweet.You can easily sit down and read it in a day or two and start putting into your life some of the skills it suggests. I also appreciate that this book doesn't get into the 'why mean people might be mean' analysis. It doesn't get into the 'why do you let mean people pick on you' analysis. I also appreciate that it doesn't really get into a lot of long stories and specific examples. This book keeps things simple, explanations are easy to understand, examples are brief and to the point. The vocabulary is creative and easy to remember.

In short, this is a fairly simple to read, easy to understand book about a huge topic. Because it is short, easy to read and easy to understand you can spend your time concentrating on how to handle various situations rather than trying to remember what the author said about this or that or the other.

I have bought several of these books. I have passed them on to people that I see struggling with similar situations that might find help in this book.

I strongly suggest that this book can be helpful provided it is read and put into use. Well worth the money. Enjoy.

A Seminal Work for Everybody

Despite its relative brevity, this book is packed with very illuminating information about the insidious and destructive tactics used by all of us when in a less-than-healthy place emotionally. Of course, the author makes allowance for the truly egregious offenders, those who set out to wreck the psyches of other people. Most important, he describes general ways, with a few specific examples, of how to effectly disarm such people and take your sanity back. I appreciated the author's acknowledgement that there isn't a "one size fits all approach" to dealing with nasty people. Nevertheless, he points you in the right direction and arms you with the tools you need to cope. Bravo!

WOW! What a great book on prayer!

Pastor Ted's book on prayer is awesome! I am using it for a prayer retreat for my youth group. It clearly outlines the need for prayer in daily life and gives great examples of how our prayers can change our lives. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, new Christians and mature ones. Pastor Ted touches on everything from being filled with the Holy Spirit in prayer to Spiritual Warfare. This book has something for everyone.

Excellent resource for psychologists and counselors

This book provides an excellent framework for creating groups to work with students with impulse control and anger issues. The lessons are easy to use and described in great detail. I also liked that it is suitable for youth up to age 11 or 12.

Awesome tool to give kids techniques to learn how to take steps in controlling anger. This should be a part of the curriculum in every school. It can be adapted and personalized to individuals or families too.

About the Author
Dr. Humphrey K. K. Tung received his BSc in Physics from the University of Alberta, both MSc and PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics from the University of Toronto. He was a quantitative analyst of C.ATS, a leading risk management software vendor in Silicon Valley. He is now a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance of the City University of Hong Kong and has taught the option pricing and implementation for financial engineering program since 2003.

Mr. Donny Lai is proficient in information systems development, IT project management, and applied finance. He has worked in the IT industry for over 20 years and received his Master Degree of Applied Finance from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. With his profound experience in e-commerce and e-finance, he is teaching in the department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong and has taught programming, data analysis, and spreading modeling since 2005. His current research interests include advanced web technologies, mobile computing, and financial computing.

Dr. Michael Wong advised more than 20 banks on market risk management, credit risk management, Basel II credit ratings systems and due diligence for wealth management services. He served as a founding member of FRM Committee of Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) in 1998-2002 and trained more than 6,000 chief risk officers, senior risk managers and bank regulators in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Macau. He founded CTRISKS (www.ctrisks.com), an Asia-based credit rating agency and risk consulting firm. Dr. Wong has published more than 50 journal articles and book chapters, and authored four professional books. He is listed in Risk Who's Who, and awarded both Teaching Excellence Award and Best Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Stephen Ng is an executive director of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, who is responsible for coordinating market risk management initiatives in the Asia Pacific region. Previously, he was a quantitative investment manager at ING Investment Management where he developed investment strategies and conducted quantitative research in FX, rates and credit. In addition, he worked at Diversified Credit Investments, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley in the past. He earned his MS in Mathematical Finance from University of Southern California and his BA in Economics from University of California, Berkeley. He is also a CFA charterholder and a Certified Financial Risk Manager.

One of the best Cook Books in Financial Engineering

This is one of the best Cook book for implementing a broad swaths of models in financial engineering. The best part of the book is its holistic nature as you are given a brief description of models and how to implement it. The bibilogrphy given at the end is one of the best part of the book as authors have given only references which are essential and good. Following those bibilograhical references gives a quick practitioners approach, which is extremely laudable. Ony thing missing is the coverage of some topics like a much deeper treatment of yield curve construction, volatility surface.
In all and all this is the book which should be in the bookshelf of any serious or aspiring person related to financial markets , derivatives and risk management.

Could be clearer

The authors know their subject matter but the writing could be clearer. You need to have a pretty good understanding of the math for this book to add any value to you. Also, the VBA examples aren't displayed in a way that makes them very understandable.
