A Concise, Bold Snapshot of 20th Century America

In "Industrialization and the Transformation of American Life: A Brief Introduction" Jonathan Rees condenses into 128 sharply focused pages the broad historical and technological forces that spread rapidly across the country after the Civil War and ushered in the modern world. Rees identifies two key factors of industrialization -- mechanization, and the division of labor (brought to their fullest expression in Henry Ford's assembly lines) -- that combined in a variety of forms to create 20th century America. He makes stunning connections between large technological and economic developments, such as the spread of railroads that unified the country, and their ripple effects on the lives of capitalists, workers, and consumers. His explanation of the historical processes that have shaped American life as we now live it is neither polemical nor apologetic. He identifies both benefits and costs, without grinding an axe. But his account is disturbing, especially as he applies his methods of analysis and assessment to our ongoing digital revolution. We are a more efficient people. But are we happier? Is technology bringing us together, or driving us apart? Lucid, balanced, cleanly written, and logically organized, this is a must read if you want to understand the times in which we live.

This book is all right for introducing the basics of machine design. Though, I wish it would go a little more deeper and have more examples, problems/exercises, and solutions/answers to those problems. It does, however provide good sources for further readings.

About the Author
James Fieser is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He received his B.A. from Berea College, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Purdue University. He is author, co-author or editor of ten textbooks, including Philosophy: A Historical Survey with Essential Readings (9/e 2014), Scriptures of the World's Religions (5/e 2014), Ethics: Discovering Right and Wrong (7/e 2012), Business Ethics and the Bottom Line (2012), A Historical Introduction to Philosophy (2003), and Moral Philosophy through the Ages (2001). He has edited and annotated the ten-volume Early Responses to Hume (2/e 2005) and the five-volume Scottish Common Sense Philosophy (2000). Samuel Enoch Stumpf was Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Emeritus Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University prior to his death in 1998, at the age of eighty. He earned a B.S. in Business and Finance from the University of California at Los Angeles, a B.D. in Theology from Andover Newton Theological School, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1948 and served as Chair of the Philosophy Department from 1952 to 1967. After a five-year term as President of Cornell College, Professor Stumpf returned to Vanderbilt, where he remained until his retirement in 1984. Professor Stumpf’s publications include Democratic Manifesto (1954), Morality and the Law (1966), and four McGraw-Hill textbooks: Socrates to Sartre: A History of Philosophy (1966; 6th ed., posthumous, 1999); Philosophical Readings: Selected Problems (1971; 4th ed., 1994); Philosophy: History and Problems (1971; 5th ed., 1994); and Elements of Philosophy: An Introduction (1979; 3rd ed., 1993).

Good, but ridiculously expensive for a paperback

This appears to be an excellent book. However, $205+ is a ridiculous price for any paperback. (I understand the costs of researching, writing, editing, and overall book production - what I'm questioning, here, is the quality of the book itself. Given the relative inexpensiveness of binding, a book that costly should be hardbound, to last longer.) Not that students have a lot of choice - they're a rather captive market.

A Significant Contribution to Nursing Knowledge

Dr.'s Picard and Jones have compiled for the practitioner, administrator, researcher and educator informative ongoing research and significant application of the theory-- Health as Expanding Consciousness- - in a variety of settings and areas of interests.

In the preface of this text Picard and Jone's articulate their goal for undertaking this project. "Giving Voice...,they say, "...is completed at a time when nurses are being asked to justify their contributions to clinical practice outcomes, Margaret Newman's theoretical perspective offers nurses a way to clearly articulate their contributions to both immediate and long-term changes in health" (p.xxiii).

Dr. Newman's perspective of the book's content is revealed through the "... astounding evidence of how nurses who embrace health as expanding consciousness are contributing to the significance of nursing care" (p.xiv). In the beginning chapter we are exposed to Dr. Newman's artful expansion of "Caring in the Human Health Experience"- -in the day to day language of the practitioner.

Exemplars and models linking health as expanding consciousness across settings and interests that include acute care and community care are thoughtfully examined and reflected on by multiple authors and practitioners who are living the experience of applying, researching and teaching the theory. Also, of significance is the link made between health as expanding consciousness and ethics- -exemplifying the nursing approach to choice, relationship, and mutual respect. This text enlightens the reader on the use of frameworks and models of care with aim to support and inform practice, education and research. "Giving Voice to What We Know..." is a must not only for students but for those individuals interested in expanding their nursing practice and influencing the health care delivery system.

The art students guide to bones and muscles

This book looks as if it had been photocopied from a very old and larger book. It would have been very interesting to read except the quality of the print and the small size of the print made it difficult and frustrating to read. I would have loved to see the names of the muscles and learn t something from what must have been a very good book when it was originally published. I returned my copy.
