Lovingly written, delightful to read

Delightful spy thriller situated in the summer and balmy autumn of 1913 (as Trevanian’s “The Summer of Katya”} when, with mainland Europe boiling with conspiracies, Britain’s Bureau of Secret Intelligence, the infant version of MI 6 (est. 1910) is finally, and incrementally, expanded. The Army and Navy long had their own intelligence branches, whilst the Foreign Office disdained espionage as a profession or career track. Therefore, the new Secret Intelligence Bureau- all stakeholders agreed- must be kept small and manageable, commanded by a mere colonel. Britain’s new counter-espionage bureau was also headed by someone easy to overrule from above... Early on, a commentator remarks that such services are useless unless controlled independently by the PM’s Office or the Cabinet’s Office.
BSI’s new staff intake is tiny: Major Dangler served in the Indian Army as a spy. He is by far the most experienced in the craft. Capt. Matthew Ranklin (MR) narrowly escaped bankruptcy and readers will see through his eyes what happens next. He is analytical and a good planner. Irishman Conall O‘Gilroy spent years in South Africa, then ran afoul of ‘Fenians’ back home. He is a proud man, an evasion & surveillance expert and a fierce fighter. And keenly interested in technology, esp. flying. This trio is also tasked with training four fresh volunteers from the armed services.
This thriller gathers real pace thanks to an Italian Senator, two foreign assassins and two sexy female characters, one English , the other an American future heiress and MR’s unlikely lover. Each and every character has secrets of their own. Professionally or personally, their minds are primed to uncover secrets of other persons and their governments.
Asked why espionage is called the Great Game, one character said Englishmen would not take spying seriously otherwise. Well researched re European pre-WW I history and regimental and class issues over centuries esp. pertaining to reasons to start wars. GL highlights GB’s 1913 industrial and fashion prowess via e.g. Burberry and BSA (Birmingham Small Arms). Also illuminating about the use of airplanes this early (GL often featured planes and their pilots in his books). This thriller taught me where the word ‘sabotage’ comes from and rushed me to the next page and chapter. Great read for fans of the history of flying, pre WW-I history and lots of intrigue. Highly recommended thriller, more authentic and better written than most..

Everything that Gavin Lyall wrote is intelligent, entertaining and informative. Combine Neville Shute, Frederick Forsythe, Ernest K. Gann and Ian Fleming, and you'd get Gavin Lyall. Highly recommended.

All you need

I used this book, and this book only to prep for the CS examination, and I passed no problem. It gives about 60 "real style" cases for you to go over, complete with checklists for things you have to cover on history, on physical exam, and on discussion with the patient. It also has a great overview of what the test is about, how it's structured, and how you'll be scored. You can easily go over the cases alone, or even better while using a partner to act out the case and work out the timing you'll need during the actual examination (it goes fast).

It's a nebulous, difficult to prepare for examination, and I found this book extremely helpful. It's very difficult to actually sit down and study for an exam like this, so going over cases and practicing is probably the best thing you can do to get ready. This book's great for practicing, and I hope this was useful.

It's all you need

I got this book because I knew that my learning style was to work it out now and look back to see what I need to fix. Sure enough this book was great because I passed without a problem. This book is great because it presents a case as would be presented during the USMLE step 2 cs and gives you a a blank page to write down questions that you would want to ask the patient or physical exam testing that you would want to do. Once you are done with the question asking, you can compare your approach with that of the book's. I also found it helpful that the book explained why you may or may not want to ask certain questions. Granted that this is a free response type of testing, you may not necessarily find the answer to every single question you ask, but then again, not finding your question may just help you understand that it is not relevant to the case.
I also found it very helpful for such cases in which you perform just the physical exam. With the current patient presentation, you can ask yourself what you would do for the PE, and you can check the list provided in the book to see what you missed or need to work on. The list should give you an idea for what the testers look for, i.e. washing your hands with every encounter. Again, the book explains why certain exams need to be performed and what the PE testing abnormalities indicate.
This book is also great in that it helps to try to direct your thinking and your differential diagnosis for the most common presentations. When I took my USMLE, I actually had a lot of the same cases that were from the book, such as the sensorineural hearing vs conductive hearing loss cases. There was even a psychiatric case where I had to write a minimental status exam for the test.
I highly recommend this book if your learning style is the kinesthetic type, i.e you learn better with hands on situations rather than just sitting and reading a book.

Not very impressive

This books explains the very basic knowledge of available-light photography, like when and how to use a tripod. Additional information is given about how to choose and use the right (Kodak-) film for specific situations. Thus I can recommend this book only to beginners in this field or people with their own lab. The photographs in this book are old and not very impressive.

Although the example pictures look like they were taken quiet some time ago, this book is very up-to-date in my opinion. I've searched through the book stores, and I think that this is the best guide for this particular topic. Easy to read, good examples, etc., "suggested exposure settings" table that comes with it, is very useful for a beginner like me.

This small book summarizes almost everything the begginer to intermediate available light photographer needs to know (zone system not included - buy Adams "The Negative"), and includes several technical tables, understandably mentioning only Kodak products. It's pleasant to find a book that describes what I have been using for years without having read it before.

Excellent!

This is one of my favourite books in my art studio. The drawings are simplified for better understanding but without being immature. I bought this a second time to give a fellow artist. I believe it is excellent for any level artist.

and it's been great. We've been reading it to her everyday since ...

When we were buying books for our little one, we wanted a mix of interactive and "regular" ones for her to read from. The interactive aspect is why we got this book, and it's been great. We've been reading it to her everyday since she was 2-3 months, and around month 6 she started pulling open the tabs that reveal the animals herself and then giving small "ooo!" exclamations. Very cute. The interesting thing I noticed with this book and a couple other interactive ones we have is that her dexterity seemed to improve a little more rapidly once she started turning the pages and opening the tabs. I also like the story line as it is logical/reasonable without being too strange. We also go to the zoo a lot with her, so the book serves to reminder her a bit of the different animals we've seen.

I would recommend this book and will continue to use it.

We have the English version and LOVE it!

My mother, a 2nd grade teacher, read this to her class and they howled with laughter. They request this book daily. So she bought a copy for my 3-year-old neice, Daphne, and she LOVES it just as much! She wants it to be read over and over again, in part because of how dramatic we are when we read it to her (and yes, we hug her at the end). The dramatic, colorful illustrations are captivating. She does ask why his teeth look like that, we dont want to say becuase he's a little terror, we just say that it's okay for everyone's teeth to look different. One day, though, when my brother, her father, was eating with his mouth open she said, "Daddy, don't be like David!" It was so funny, to see her mind working and remembering that. It's a funny book that should be a part of every child's collection. Heck, I want if for myself even though I haven't any kids yet!

Spawn of Something Awful!!

Note: A single cyber stalker at work! A first grade teacher in California is responsible!

At the end of the day-- all day-- do you wonder, really, whose children are in your house? Those can't be MY children! MY children would be much quieter, less rambunctious, and certainly models of good behavior.

What child has sharp, pointed teeth--the better to resemble something monstrous? What child has beady monster eyes--the better to see his way into more mischief? And what child would put on his baseball uniform and hit pop flies in the living room even though you just told him to go outside?

Not David! Poor David, just trying to have fun: writing on walls, standing precariously on chairs to get the cookie jar, tracking in mud, creating a Niagra Falls water flow over the side of the bathtub, running down the street naked, banging a pot with a metal spoon, playing with his food, chewing with his mouth open and on and on.

Wait, he does have feelings. He is put in the corner, but sitting there breaks his heart. Does Mommy still love me?, he cries. She calls him to her, holds him affectionately with the teeniest show of exasperation and says, "Yes, David..I love you!"

His relieved and softened face leaves me in tears. David is just a little boy. We must wait a bit for him to mature before we expect too much.

Here's the story behind the story. David Shannon is the illustrator/writer. "A few years ago, my mother sent me a book I made when I was a little boy. It was called 'No, David,' and it was illustrated with drawings of David doing all sorts of things he wasn't supposed to do." So Mr. Shannon did a remake.

It may be called hyperbole in literature, maybe in art as well, or artistic license. So when David tracks mud in, you have to accept that toadstools and little plants are growing from David's scalp and feet. Would David really have sharp, pointed teeth, or does his noise factor make him seem like a little monster? Can he really stick his finger up his nose all the way to the first knuckle toward the hand part? Or, is Shannon exaggerating for effect?

"No, David" is a self-study of a rambunctious childhood, playfully rendered and wildly caricatured to make sure the child reader understands that little David in NOT a monster and that actions have consequences.

This is a book that children love and delight to "read."

Priceless

It's like cheating and learning and realizing all at the same time. This is an excellent teaching aid for students in the arts, humanities or even in business who need to fill in some holes in their education. Obviously, it is not thorough, but it provides an overview of the most important theories of The Way of reality, which can create epiphanies. It is a wonderful gift. I wish I could afford to buy them out.

We all hear about scientific theories but who has the time to figure out what they mean? You do! Each one takes 30 seconds, more of less. Concepts you never thought you'd grasp (I'm just an economist) are suddenly quite clear -- not clear enough to get an "A" on a science test, but clear enough to make you amazed. Paul Parsons should get some award for this very slim opus.

About the Author
C. Michael Bowers is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. He is also the Deputy Medical Examiner in Ventura, California. Dr. Bowers is a practicing forensic dentist and consultant who has testified and worked on hundreds of cases where dental evidence has been involved. He is a former Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, a Senior Crime Scene Analyst for the International Association for Identification (IAI) and has written other articles, chapters and books on forensic dentistry. He owns and operates his own dental practice in Ventura, CA.

As a lawyer and expert witness who has testified and examined hundreds of cases, Dr. Bowers’ knowledge and insight into both arenas of the courtroom is evident.
The text includes a thorough overview of what a prospective expert should be aware of regarding the legal system and how forensic evidence should be prepared for courtroom presentation. The chapters cover topics such as the admissibility of forensic expert evidence, character traits of expert witnesses, voir dire and direct examination of the expert, cross examination - the expert’s challenge and the lawyer’s strategies. The text also includes an insightful exploration into the science behind forensic science, ethics and forensic expert failures.
The content is well organized and easy to follow. In twelve chapters Dr. Bowers and his co-authors Dr. Mark Page, Mr. Brent Turvey, and Ms. Wendy Koen present information with clear and concise descriptions. The book opens with a reprint of an interesting presentation given by the Honorable Harry T. Edwards – The National Academy of Science Report on Forensic Sciences: What it Means for the Bench and Bar. The first chapter gives the history of English common law and as the title implies, provides advice for the beginning expert.
Chapter 2 explains science as it pertains to forensic science. It explains concepts in a manner that is easy to understand. In Chapter 3 admissibility of expert evidence is discussed. Included is a necessary background of important cases that have contributed to admissibility. The next chapter illustrates forensic expert practice.
Chapter 5 describes how to mange a forensic case, case preparation and how to speak with attorneys. Chapter 6 follows on from this with good and bad traits of expert witnesses, listing what to do and what not to do. Chapter 7 deals with becoming qualified as an expert as well as what to expect with direct examination and Chapter 8 focuses on cross examination.
Chapter 9 resumes with a scientific principal that all experts should be aware of namely uniqueness and individualization in forensic science. The book wraps up with the cases of forensic failures, ethics, and the power entailed in expert testimony.
Most chapters conclude with a box entitled - Innocence Blog- which highlights a case of wrongful conviction. In conclusion, this book is a useful reference and a great addition to any collection of forensic texts.

A must read book for people in the forensic jobs!

Everyone watches CSI and forensic related TV series, fake. This is the real information, the science and the expert evidence. Described why certain cases go wrong. And the responsibility of an expert witness. This book opens up my mind and allows me to understand certain legal cases from a different perspective. A great book to have.
